Review: ‘Army of the Dead’ is dumb, fun, and Zack Snyder’s best movie in years

ARMY OF THE DEAD

Zack Snyder has been making comic movies almost exclusively for the last 15 years, starting with 300 and most recently with this year’s release of his extended cut of Justice League. That’s not a complaint, but it is interesting to me that he has come back to zombies after having finished that run, the genre that started his career.

It is my opinion that his remake of Dawn of the Dead, penned by James Gunn and released in 2004 as his first feature, is my favourite of Snyder’s films. His return to the genre is a proposition that I found exciting, and while it’s not a perfect movie by any stretch, Army of the Dead is his best movie in ages.

LOL: ‘The Snyder Cut’, which is totally a thing that exists and is ready to release, is getting $70 Million worth of reshoots

Justice League

Fans have been insisting that The Snyder Cut is real and ready to go for years now, which totally explains why when Warner Brothers finally decided to go ahead and release it to HBO Max it required an additional $30 million budget to finish all the post-production. Now, Zack Snyder is headed back to the studio with an addition $70 Million to do a bunch of reshoots. Because of course.

Warner Brothers’ 2020 Vision – Harry Potter & LEGO Trilogies and a Justice League Ten Pack

warner_bros

Warner Bros. had a lot to say at their Time Warner investors meeting today, and most of it was “YOU WANT MOVIES? I’LL SHOW YOU MOVIES!”  CEO Kevin Tsujihara gave us a timeline of what Warner Bros. will be working on over the next 6 years.  Buckle up (and maybe submit a resume), because it’s one hell of a breakneck pace they’re working with.  One that’s not going to leave much room for error, and I would assume means we won’t be seeing Ben Affleck direct movies for a little while.  And that isn’t the only thing we won’t be seeing. Here’s A Photo Of The New Batmobile

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Batmobile

Here you go folks. Zack Snyder tweeted an official image of the new Batmobile. It looks… fine. There were some photos posted yesterday by a bystander of the thing parked in the street which I didn’t post, partly because i am on holiday and partly because they were terrible photos, but this gives a much better idea of the actual look.

Yes, there’s a big gun on the front. Apparently there is more than a little backlash around the web about the gun but I don’t really care. Every Bat-vehicle so far has had lots of guns and Zack Snyder’s style isn’t exactly subtle, so why are we at all surprised?

Besides, this new franchise has already missed the point of Superman and this movie in particular only exists to set up more movies in the future. Another studio tried that with one of the most popular superheroes on the planet this year and it went, uh, poorly.

Don’t get me wrong here: I sincerely hope this movie turns out to be fantastic. I really do. WE’re living in a golden age of nerd properties being cool and I want to revel in every moment of it before it passes. I just have no faith that this director and this writer are going to deliver a good movie. They couldn’t even come up with a good title after all.

Officially Official: Justice League To Follow Superman vs. Batman, Zach Snyder To Direct, For Real And Officially On The Record This Time. Officially.

Justice League

The Wall Street Journal finally got it on the record. Justice League will follow Superman vs. Batman and Zack Snyder is going to direct it. Ugh.

Fast & Furious Badass Cast As Wonder Woman

WW2Warner Bros have just announced that Israeli actress Gal Gadot will be donning Wonder Woman’s famous outfit for the sequel to Man Of Steel, currently known as Batman vs Superman. You may remember her from kicking all kinds of ass in the most recent Fast & Furious movies, so she’s definitely got the moves to match the jawline.

From director Zack Snyder in Variety:

“Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”

Some might say that she hasn’t got the stocky figure that Diana is known for, but remember that Michael Keaton was physically no Batman yet he turned out to be one of the best. It’s also reassuring that Warner have gone for an actress who has proven she can both act and fight. For me, this is the first real positive piece of news to come out of the production, so I can’t wait to see her cleaving her way through another movie.

Awesome: Batman vs Superman Is Happening

In his packed San Diego Comic Con panel, Man Of Steel director Zack Snider brought the house down this afternoon by announcing that the MOS sequel will feature Batman. Here’s the symbol that got the crowds going:

BatsSupes As if that were not enough, he then brought out actor Harry Lennix to read out the following lines:

I want you to remember, Clark…in all the years to come…in your most private moments…I want you to remember…my hand…at your throat…I want…you to remember…the one man who beat you.

In Frank Miller’s amazing graphic novel Dark Knight Returns, Batman has an epic fight against Superman and the above speech is from the final moments. It’s considered one of the standout stories in both franchises, so this could be very exciting indeed.

300 Rise of an Empire

Remember 300? Zach Snyder broke big on that movie based on a Frank Miller graphic novel. It’s not exactly high art, but it was pretty fun and certainly has a distinctive style.
