Hello! It’s that time again^. Got some time to kill this weekend? Come along to Vancouver Convention Centre and spend three days in a sweaty Aladdin’s cave of wonders. Fan Expo is a chance for fans of games, movies, TV, comics and anime to come together and appreciate^^ the awesome cosplay on display.
Mark and I^^^ will be there for all three days soaking in the goodness and making sure to keep you updated. We’ll feature the best of Mark’s outstanding photos over the next few days, and I’ll be tweeting^^^^ everything as it happens from the Awesome Friday Twitter account ([@AwesomeFridayCa](https://twitter.com/AwesomeFridayCa)).
See you there!
Very sad news this morning that Leonard Nimoy has passed away, a few days after being admitted to hospital for chest pains. It’s very telling that, while lovers of specific science fiction series are quick to point out the flaws of others, no-one ever touched Spock. Everyone loved him, thanks to the gravitas and humanity that Nimoy brought to what could so easily have been a stereotypical impassive alien character so common at the time. As a person, he was a lover of culture and art and never stopped his message of love and acceptance.
I’m obviously not the *Star Trek* fanboy of the Awesome Friday partnership, so I’m sure there’ll be more reflections on this over the coming week. In the mean time, we send our thoughts to his family. RIP.
Now go and watch some *Star Trek*.
It’s been a slow start to 2015 for all of us. That changes today. Here comes the 2015 Oscars or, as Matt so eloquently refers to it, rich people giving their friends golden statues. And we’ll be there every step of the way.
The main show starts at 5:30pm PT, and we’ll start wittering away from twenty minutes or so beforehand on the site liveblog. As you can image from [Matt’s reaction to the nominations](https://awesomefriday.ca/2015/01/the-2015-oscar-nominations-or-the-year-i-fall-out-of-love-with-the-oscars/), it’s likely to be a rather sarcastic affair that is sure to reference the absence of *The Lego Movie* roughly 2,428 times. Join us and join in!
Kat’s going to be giving her own spin on the event on [her Twitter](https://twitter.com/katarnett), and Matt and I will more than likely be posting to the [Awesome Friday Twitter](https://twitter.com/AwesomeFridayCa) too, so you have many options for your Oscars viewing pleasure.
See you soon!
And that seems to be the theme of the second *Avengers* movie – self-destruction of the team from within. Here’s the second full trailer!

*Call Of Duty Online* is a free-to-play China-exclusive version of the mega franchise trailored specifically for its first (official) foray into their new, recently legalised, videogame market. Here’s the trailer – see if you can spot anyone familiar:

2014! I had another baby and as such my Best Of The Year list is maybe not as exhaustive as Matt’s, but I could tell you anything you need to know about *Go, Diego, Go!*. And how 3am feels.
Here’s my best movies and games of the year.

Just like I did.
Remember the promotion Nintendo ran at the beginning of the year, where (after buying a WiiU) any purchase from their eShop would earn you points? Well, if you have been happily buying the odd title for it, there’s a good chance you have some eShop credit waiting for you.
But you have to hurry a little.
Here’s the brand new trailer for the next *Terminator* movie that seems to have survived the *awful* subtitle and casting of budget-Sam-Worthington Jai Courtney to produce something that actually, somehow, looks really good. Take a look.

Earlier this morning, director Sam Mendes pulled the sheet off the latest entry in the James Bond franchise – Spectre – and the Internet exploded in a flurry of Sean Connery jokes. Daniel Craig is back as the titular agent and the rest of the revealed cast is a great collection of beauty and danger.
Schplendid.
Artist Juan Carlos Ruiz Burgos has taken some classic DC Comics characters and re-imagined them (on his [deviantART page](http://ruizburgos.deviantart.com/gallery/49414039/The-Saturday-Evening-Post-Series)) as [Saturday Evening Post](https://www.google.ca/search?q=saturday+evening+post&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=IK1_VNfXCYKSoQSP2oHQBA&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=643) cover stars in a tribute to Post artists Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker.
And they’re amazing.

With (our good friend) [Tom Hardy](https://www.google.ca/search?q=tom+hardy&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=fHZ_VIGwCKn2iQLs94DoDQ&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=643) as [Rick Flagg](https://www.google.ca/search?q=Rick+Flagg&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=lnZ_VKGAHYqBiwLXuICIBQ&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=643), [Margot Robbie](https://www.google.ca/search?q=margot+robbie&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=vXZ_VITjHYXqiQK1gYHYDQ&sqi=2&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ) as [Harley Quinn](https://www.google.ca/search?q=margot+robbie&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=vXZ_VITjHYXqiQK1gYHYDQ&sqi=2&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ#tbm=isch&q=harley+quinn), [Jai Courtney](https://www.google.ca/search?q=margot+robbie&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=vXZ_VITjHYXqiQK1gYHYDQ&sqi=2&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ#tbm=isch&q=plank+of+wood) as [Boomerang](https://www.google.ca/search?q=margot+robbie&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=vXZ_VITjHYXqiQK1gYHYDQ&sqi=2&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ#tbm=isch&q=boomerang+suicide+squad), [Cara Delevingne](https://www.google.ca/search?q=Cara+Delevingne&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Mnd_VNH9LOr2iQKayIA4&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=643) as [Enchantress](https://www.google.ca/search?q=Enchantress&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=SHd_VJKoMOKrjALBpYFo&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=643#tbm=isch&q=Enchantress+suicide+squad), and [Will Smith](https://www.google.ca/search?q=margot+robbie&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=vXZ_VITjHYXqiQK1gYHYDQ&sqi=2&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ#tbm=isch&q=will+smith) – yes, *that* Will Smith – as [Deadshot](https://www.google.ca/search?q=Deadshot&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=kHd_VK7kKua4iALaz4C4CA&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=643).
As reported by [io9](http://io9.com/will-smith-tom-hardy-jared-leto-all-confirmed-for-sui-1665900563), this casting finally ends the rumours as to who will play the collection of supervillains. *Suicide Squad* sees them forced to come together to carry out the government’s dirty work, so it could work really well. Some interesting casting choices there – I’ve no idea who Rick Flagg is but Tom Hardy is always good value, and Margot Robbie playing Harley Quinn is a fantastic choice. Also, my countdown timer for when Will Smith pulls out has started. However, it’s [Jared Leto](https://www.google.ca/search?q=Jared+Leto&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=6Xd_VJiRJMmGigKBp4EQ&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ)’s takeover of the [Joker](https://www.google.ca/search?q=Jared+Leto&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=6Xd_VJiRJMmGigKBp4EQ&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ#tbm=isch&q=joker) role that will have the most focus. He certain has the intensity, but does he have the dark humour?
We’ll find out…in 2016.
Final request, though: CAN HOLLYWOOD PLEASE STOP CASTING JAI COURTNEY. IN ANYTHING. EVER. Ahem. Thanks.
Just in case you were wondering, Ubisoft will be following up the broken *Assassin’s Creed Unity* – a game so utterly unfinished that they decided to give whole games away to pacify those that had bought the Season Pass – and the newly-released broken arcade racer *The Crew* – [which has a day-one patch to enable players to, you know, join a Crew, but is still plagued by intermittent, progress-wiping connection failures](http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-12-03-the-crew-is-broken-but-packed-with-potential) – with a new broken *Assassin’s Creed*, this time subtitled *Victory*, set in Victorian London.
It’s quite the scoop by Kotaku, and one that Ubisoft is none too happy about. The new location could actually be exciting if we didn’t already know that it will likely carry the same crunching problems and tired gameplay requirements.
If you’re still interested in this drained franchise, head over to the [full article on Kotaku](http://kotaku.com/next-years-big-assassins-creed-is-set-in-victorian-lond-1665343788) to discover all of *Victory*’s new secrets. Like a grappling hook. And train-top combat. Yay.
*Interstellar* left me cold. [Matt liked it more](https://awesomefriday.ca/2014/11/quick-review-interstellar/), but to me it completely failed in its mission to inspire wonder about the stars above us. Luckily, filmmaker Erik Wernquist has taken inspiration from actual photos of our solar system to make a short film called *Wonderers*, an exhilarating vision of humanity’s spacefaring future set to a narration by Carl Sagan.
If, like me, you can’t help but stare open-mouthed at a clear starry sky, this could be the most beautiful thing you watch this year.
