Hello! It’s that time again^. Got some time to kill this weekend? Come along to Vancouver Convention Centre and spend three days in a sweaty Aladdin’s cave of wonders. Fan Expo is a chance for fans of games, movies, TV, comics and anime to come together and appreciate^^ the awesome cosplay on display.
Mark and I^^^ will be there for all three days soaking in the goodness and making sure to keep you updated. We’ll feature the best of Mark’s outstanding photos over the next few days, and I’ll be tweeting^^^^ everything as it happens from the Awesome Friday Twitter account (@AwesomeFridayCa).
It’s been a month since we last recorded so there’s a lot to talk about! We’re going to talk about games including Hotline Miami, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zero, and Trials! We’re going to talk about movies including The Raid 2, Draft Day, Transcendence, Noah, American Hustle, and Brick Mansions! Last but not least we talk about last weekend’s Fan Expo Vancouver 2014!
This episode is 90 minutes long so let’s get started!
Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can (apart from pose for photos because he’s suddenly too shy to do that even though he’ll gladly spend thirty minutes breakdancing to the music pumping out of the t-shirt stall).
I took my son to Fan Expo, and this is the only shot I have of him fully masked before the (possibly cosplay-related) shyness took hold and all he wanted to do was play in the amazing Lego section. Although, to be fair, who can blame him.
We’ve been spending the long weekend at a fan convention so you know what that means! Cosplay! Our friend and photographer Mark has been helping us out again this year so here are 52 (53 counting the one above) images of the best cosplay at Fan Expo Vancouver 2014!
Phew. Even though we only started at 2pm, our feet are worn to stubs and there’s so much sugar/caffeine/carbs in our bodies that we’ll probably be awake for hours, but it was all worth it. Fan Expo Vancouver day one was a blast!
It’s been a year since we spent twosoliddays trekking around Vancouver Convention Centre admiring all the celebrities, cosplay and attractions of 2013’s Fan Expo Vancouver. Now 2014’s show is already just around the corner and looks bigger than ever, so dust off your Spidey suit and join us!
There are more photos coming later tonight but as a quick bonus to tide you over, I took some video with my phone at the Nichelle Nichols Q&A. The quality isn’t amazing, but this is a clip of her telling the story about the first interracial kiss on television between Uhura and Kirk.
It’s a pretty cool story so I thought I would share it. I wish I could share her whole Q&A session, she was a blast to listen to. Funny and sassy and clearly at ease, and we all loved her for it. Hit the jump for a very poorly shot video.
There’s something very special about day two of the Fan Expo. I noticed it last year too, but I put it down to only discovering that I was really into comics in the second part of Sunday. This year was very different – once I’d sorted out David Prowse’s autograph on my limited edition translucent-helmet electrified Darth Vader figurine (OH YES), I headed straight for the art and spent most of Saturday picking through my favourite pieces. Somehow, today was far more relaxed (even if, at times, it didn’t feel any less busy) and I had a great time chatting with all the cool people that surrounded me, as well as waiting two hours to again meet David Hayter, AKA Solid Snake (who jointly holds the title of Nicest Celebrity Ever with Micha Collins).
So, thanks to the organisers for making today go much more smoothly, and a huge thank you to all the cosplayers who posed instantly when I went in for my photo. See you next year!
