Trailer Roundup: three new movies, 4 new TV series, and also Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

MPAA Red Band

It has been kind of a slow week for movie trailers, but HBO and Netflix have released some series trailers that are definitely worth taking a look at. This week we have trailers for The Mandela Effect, Bloodshot, and Adopt a Highway as well as HBO’s Watchmen, the final season of Silicon Valley, and 2020 series The Outsider, and finally, Netflix has released a trailer for the third season of The Crown featuring a whole new cast.

Oh, and a B-Movie franchise called "Star Wars" released a trailer as well.

Review: ‘The War of the Worlds’ is a thoughtful, Edwardian adventure

War of the Worlds

The War of the Worlds is a classic story that has been adapted numerous times. Whether your favourite is the Orson Welles radio drama, the Tom Cruise/Steven Spielberg adaptation, or Independence Day this is clearly a story you’ve seen before.

What’s interesting though is that despite the many adaptations there are precious few that take place within the time frame of the original written story. Which is one of the two refreshing changes with this thoughtful adaptation of the story produced by the BBC and airing on T+E in Canada.

If you’re expecting an action blockbuster I’m telling you that you should temper those expectations right now, this adaptation is a thoughtful slow burn more concerned with the effect the invasion would have than the invasion itself. That is to say, it’s pretty good.

My Favourite Harry Dean Stanton Performances

A few days ago the world got a little dimmer. Harry Dean Stanton passed away at the age of 91. Celebrity deaths don’t generally hit me that hard but this one did. Stanton is the kind of actor that elevated every project he was a part of, whether he was in a lead role or a quick cameo. Roger Ebert once said that any movie with Harry Dean Stanton in a supporting role couldn’t be all bad and for my money that is a true statement.

He has one film left to come out, this years ***Lucky*** (pictured above). I’m looking forward to seeing ***Lucky** at VIFF next week and it is one of the films I’ve been anticipating most. I imagine now, as the last performance of a legend, it may take on a bittersweet quality.

Stanton has left a staggering filmography and each entry has a notable performance. Here now I’d like to share with you my favourite three by way of tribute to his amazing career.
