App Review: Impossible Road (iOS)

ImpossibleRoad1

Mobile touchscreen games can often be accused of doing too much. Immersive storylines and complex controls are all well and good, but these do not translate well to small screens obscured by thumbs clawing at virtual sticks. As I noted when discussing my game of 2012 [Super Hexagon](https://awesomefriday.ca/2012/12/simons-best-of-2012/), the best mobile games are proving to be those that run with a single refined concept with simplistic on/off controls, and Kevin Ng’s *Impossible Road* is the latest title to show how mobile touchscreen gaming can also be hardcore.

A word of warning, though: you might hate this game. I get the feeling that there’s no middle ground with *Impossible Road*, and this is probably how you’ll start out, thumbs pressing hard into your screen, willing your ever-rolling ball to *just bank harder dammit*. However, give it time, learn what it *really* wants from you, and the shiny claws of addiction soon take firm hold.

The concept of *Impossible Road* is simple enough: a clean blue-on-white title screen takes you straight into the game, an unbordered white sphere rolling down a twisting blue path. Visually it’s very striking, looking like a Tron universe version of a marble rollercoaster, and is underscored by a pulsing soundtrack. If your ball falls off track and far enough into the void, whiteout rushing up to meet you with the same growing audio scream from *Mirror’s Edge*, it’s game over and back to a screen which simply asks, “Again?”. Scoring is based on number of gates rolled through, each growing in number by one. In these first few minutes you’ll spend more time tumbling into space than staying on track, swearing at the injustice, scoring never threatening to raise up into double figures.

There’s one extra score on your game over screen, however, and it’s this that points you towards the secret heart of the game. “Total Jumped”, with “Best Jump”, seem at first to be random numbers that doesn’t seem connected to gameplay at all. The moment it clicks – perhaps when the whole *game* clicks – is when you work this out. What this tally counts is not really small jumps – of which there are many – but more the leaps from one section of track down to the next. If you fall off track, your whiteout death can be instantly interrupted if you make contact with another piece of track. Moreover, the “Best Jump” counter keeps track of how many gates you jump – it’s possible, for example, to go from 3 to 22 points with a carefully controlled set of tense descents. It’s here that addiction kicks in. Your focus shifts from controlling the sphere along the twists and turns to always keeping an eye below your current level,  looking for an opportunity to take a short cut and desperately aiming for the score gates to make the risks actually worthwhile. It’s a frenetic, tense experience where breathing becomes secondary.

There’s definitely an element of blind luck that perhaps removes it from a being an exercise of pure skill and, more often than not, you’ll completely misjudge a fall and end up with that question, “Again?”. However, it carries that secret element where you start becoming sure of how you can drop further next time, and your slowly rising score give this even more emphasis. You could hate it, of course, but there’s a very strong chance that you might discover a mobile game that bares the same hardcore teeth as the sublime *Super Hexagon*. At just $1.99, that’s worth a drop.

Spec Ops: The Line Review

specops_cityvista_1920x1080

Some would argue – with very good reason – that Playstation Plus is the best thing to happen to this generation of consoles. The subscription service, initially derided as a blatant move to mirror Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold and capitalise on the money Sony misses out on by offering free online multiplayer, eventually found its own identity as a wonderful way to build a game collection. Every month, as Xbox merely provides an open doorway to online interaction, Sony fills the Instant Game Collection with full titles free to download and keep for as long as the subscription remains active. The selection is varied and generous, leading to many remaining dormant on hard drives while more modern games assert their own importance. This was definitely true for my relationship with *Spec Ops: The Line*, a game I’d been itching to try since release but never actually found the time to play. However, upon finishing the game last night, I felt I should use this review primarily as a wake-up call to anyone else who might have it sat unplayed as I did: next time you need something new, start it up. For, while its ambitions don’t always overcome its distractions, *Spec Ops: The Line* is especial in its one defining quality – it’s a robust military shooter that dares to tell a story. It insists on it, actually, and the resulting experience is refreshing, albeit mainly memorable for the brutality that is played out.

J.J. Abrams Thinks John Williams Will Be Back for More Star Wars

JJ Abrams

20130501-130345.jpg

[J.J. Abrams speaking at a press conference in Berlin](http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/BatFreak/news/?a=78572):

> Michael Giacchino is an incredible composer, who I was lucky enough to begin working with on Alias. … He’s truly one of the most influential members of our crew, and I think this score, he really outdid himself. Again, for Star Wars, it’s very early days, but I believe that, going forward, John Williams will be doing that film, because he was there long before I was.

On the one hand this is pretty great news if only because John Williams is a great composer and he’s been scoring Star Wars since Star Wars started. It’s also great because the more things to differentiate J.J. Abrams _Star Wars_ from J.J. Abrams _Star Trek_ the better if you ask me.

On the other hand, Michael Giacchino is my favourite composer working today and I’d really. Like to see his take on it.

So I’m of two minds on the subject. What do you guys think?

Awesome: Steven Soderbergh on The State of Cinema

Steven Soderbergh

Steven Soderbergh gave an address on the state of cinema at the [San Francisco International Film Festival](http://festival.sffs.org/) and the whole thing is on Sound Cloud to listen to. I recommend you do, whether you have a love of film like I do or not, the man has some interesting things to say on the subject.

I’ve embedded the player and some thoughts after the jump.

Awesome: Natalie Portman to Star Opposite Michael Fassbender in MacBeth Film

20130430-192833.jpg

Speaking of Shakespeare, looks like we’re getting some more of it next year:

[Matt Goldberg writing for Collider](http://collider.com/natalie-portman-macbeth/):

> Yesterday, we reported the exciting news that Michael Fassbender was set to lead a new screen adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s Macbeth. We also reported that talks were “underway with at least one Hollywood leading actress,” to play the role of Lady Macbeth. Today, Screen Daily is reporting that the actress is Natalie Portman, and she has agreed to take the part. Directed by Justin Kurzel (The Snowtown Murders) and written by Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff, the adaptation will take place in the 11th century, and will “be a visceral approach to the story including significant battle scenes

So two great actors starring in a film adaptation of one of the bards most famous plays. Where do I sign, exactly??

New XBOX to be Announced 21st May

New XBOX

Soooooooo this is a thing that’s happening. Given how underwhelming the PS4 announcement was, and also considering the rumours of things like it not being backwards compatible and always needs to be online I can’t say that I am too terribly excited.

Which is a shame because I’d like to be excited. I like my XBOX 360, but if it turns out that Microsoft is selling a replacement instead of an upgrade I’ll probably go back to PC gaming and never look back.

Well, maybe not never.

Awesome: Marvel Confirms Daredevil Rights Now Back In The Fold

20130423-120815.jpg

[According to Newsarama](http://www.newsarama.com/film/kevin-feige-daredevil-marvel-studios.html):

> Speaking with Newsarama Monday at the Iron Man 3 press junket, the Marvel Studios president of production told us at the end of our conversation that, as previously speculated, the Daredevil rights are now under the Disney/Marvel umbrella. We directly asked Feige if the reports that Marvel Studios now had the rights to Daredevil were accurate, to which he replied, “To Daredevil? Yes.”

> In August, it was reported that previous rights-holder Fox had a deadline of Oct. 10 to put a Daredevil film into production before the rights returned to Marvel, a deadline that then passed. Though it was widely assumed this meant the character was now under Marvel control, no official announcement followed.

I know some of you only have experience with Daredevil by way of the 2003 movie, which a lot of people don’t like, but the character is great. Think Batman, but without the money and with actual super powers.

So I chalk this up as a good thing. The question now is, what are they going to do with him?

Not Awesome: Futurama To End Again in Sept

Fry + Bender

Dan Snierson for [Entertainment Weekly](http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/04/22/futurama-not-renewed-comedy-central/)

> The Planet Express ship will soon make its final delivery.

> Comedy Central has decided not to renew Futurama, which means that the 31st-century-set animated comedy will end its 140-episode run on Sept. 4. The final 13 episodes, which represent the second half of season 7, begin airing on June 19 at 10 p.m.

> Futurama is no stranger to cancellation, of course: The series aired from 1999 to 2003 before Fox sent Fry & Co. into oblivion. After thriving in reruns on Adult Swim, Futurama was relaunched in 2007 with four-direct-to-DVD movies that Comedy Central ran in half-hour increments as a 16-episode fifth season in 2008-09. Comedy Central subsequently ordered a sixth season of 26 episodes, which aired in 2010-11, and a seventh season of 26 episodes, the first half of which debuted in 2012.

> The news did not come as a shock to executive producer David X. Cohen and creator Matt Groening, who had thought their space explorations were ending three previous times (after the Fox run, after the four movies, and after Comedy Central’s first 26-episode order). “I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news,” Cohen tells EW. “It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.”

This is sad news for one of my all time favourite shows, however as David X Cohen said it’s not entirely unexpected. I’m sure they’ll go out on some amazing gag though so there is that to look forward to. Not to mention endless re-watching on Netflix.

Fan Expo Vancouver: Day One

Owww.

Sorry, in times like these, my back gains a voice of its own. I’m pretty sure that buying advance tickets should mean that you don’t have to wade through three line-ups in 90 minutes just to get through the main door.

Grumble.

Anyway, I’ve just got back from a long day pacing the aisles of Fan Expo Vancouver, checking out the shiny merchandise and trying not to gawp *too* much at the cosplay (pretty sure I failed). It’s always a strange mixture of feelings, being jammed in with a mixed crowd of average Joes and Super Heroes/Villains/Animals/Robots. It’s *so* busy, and everything is *so* focused on the price tags, that it’s very easy to let cynicism overtake as the day’s main emotion. However, what saves it is the subject. Actually, it’s the people and their *love* for the subject. What Fan Expo gives you – me – is a weekend of pure relief, from not resisting the urge to talk about the colour scheme of an X-Wing or comment on the merits of the ninth Doctor. Really, I’m not in the same league of geekdom/nerdvana as many of today’s willfully obsessed attendees, but it was such a pleasure to absorb their enthusiasm for a short while.

So, here’s a collection of tasty snaps from my camera. Matt will have plenty to add here, so watch this space!

Holy Shit: Disney Announces A New Star Wars EVERY YEAR Starting with Episode VII

Disney Star Wars

In case you were wondering if Disney was going to beat the horse until it died and then keep on beating it some more, here’s [Adam Chitwood writing for Collider](http://collider.com/star-wars-movies-every-year-2015-disney/):

> Get ready for a whole lot of Star Wars, folks. Disney took the stage today for its presentation at CinemaCon—a convention for theater owners—in Las Vegas, and the studio made the bold announcement that it is planning on releasing a new Star Wars film into theaters every summer starting with 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII. The studio will alternate every other year with an “Episode” film and a standalone film, and based on previous rumors there certainly won’t be a lack of characters for them to mine.

It’s strange, Disney has Marvel pumping out 2 movies a year now and I am not really worried about the quality of them. Disney says they’re going tp pump out a new Star Wars film every year and I get all worried.

This is likely because I can’t seem to forget how bad the new trilogy of movies was, or remember that a lot of the rest of new Star Wars stuff (eg: The Clone Wars series) has been pretty good.

No matter how it turns out though, this is officially a thing that is happening. Any thoughts guys?

Awesome: Stanley Tucci joins Transformers 4

Stanley Tucci

Good news everyone!

[Angie Han writing for Slashfilm](http://www.slashfilm.com/stanley-tucci-joins-transformers-4/)

> The 3D IMAX camera wasn’t the only new addition to Transformers 4 announced at CinemaCon yesterday. Michael Bay also revealed that Stanley Tucci had boarded the cast, joining Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, and Jack Reynor.

> Character details have been kept under wraps, but an earlier report suggested that the film could center around a young woman, her dad, and her racecar driver boyfriend. Peltz, Wahlberg, and Reynor seem to fit those descriptions, but it’s harder to say how Tucci fits in.

I’m holding out basically zero hope that Transformers 4 will be any good, but adding Tucci to any movie is a welcome bit of news. Him and Wahlberg both know how to be fun to watch, so maybe this one will turn out better than the last three.

Not that that’ll be hard….

Everything Wrong With Transformers in 7 Minutes of Less

transformers

You’re probably aware by now that I love the “[Everything Wrong With…” series of videos by CinemaSins](https://awesomefriday.ca/tag/everything-wrong-with/), and although –as they rightly point out– no movie is without sin I really do feel like they’re at the best when they are picking apart terrible, terrible movies. So here is their take on Transformers.
