Climate change is real. I can’t believe this is a thing that we still have to debate in the 2020s, but there is a not-insignificant portion of people –or at least people in positions of power– who seem content to let it happen in the name of high-profit margins, and have found a multitude of ways to distract the populace into either ignorance or obliviousness.
This is also the plot of Adam McKay’s new film Don’t Look Up, which presents a world not unlike our own that happens to have a planet-killing comet headed directly toward it and a and of scientists unable to convince the world to do anything about it. Subtle, this movie is not. Of course, subtly isn’t a requirement for a satire in the form of a pitch-black comedy, but you know what is? Humour. Unfortunately, this movie isn’t humorous either.

It’s December which means I have pretty much exactly no time to do anything lately but that hasn’t stopped me from seeing a couple of movies, just from writing them up in a timely manner.
But since I’ve seen so many you’re gonna get the shortest version of each of these reviews that I can muster.

We’ve already seen a lot of posters for the 3rd Hunger Games movie but none with the films protagonist. So they fixed that sorta.

There’s finally a full trailer for _X-Men: Days of Future Past_ and, well, I have mixed feelings.

The marketing machine is ramping up for _X-Men: Days of Future Past_. Here are a bunch of trailers which are… well some of them are good and some of them are awful. I’ll let you be the judge.

It’s hard to believe that it has only been a year and a half since _The Hunger Games_ came out. There has been a string of young adult books adapted into movies following the success of Harry Potter, most of them featuring an up and coming young actor in the lead surrounded by Hollywood veterans, usually fighting against some oppressive regime. The Hunger Games was no different. Jennifer Lawrence was aiming for her big break and Lionsgate was looking for a new cash cow.
The film itself wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t really _good_ either. Suffering from a small budget and a weak screenplay it fell comfortably into the “good enough” category and made enough money to warrant adapting the rest of the series into movies.
It’s a good thing too because where _The Hunger Games_ was just good enough, _The Hunger Games: Catching Fire_ is actually really good.

IMAX posters are usually pretty cool but this IMAX poster for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is just gorgeous.

The [first trailer was mainly just clips set to music](https://awesomefriday.ca/2013/08/american-hustle-trailer-has-bigger-balls-than-you/) and it looked awesome enough. This one has some character and plot elements and I’m even more on board.

American Hustle looks like it might be another smash hit from director David O. Russell, he of _Silver Linings Playbook_ and _The Fighter_ fame. You’ve already [seen a trailer for the abscam thriller](https://awesomefriday.ca/2013/08/american-hustle-trailer-has-bigger-balls-than-you/) and now you can get a closer look at the characters.

David O Russell has made some great films and it looks like he’s basically asked everyone who’s been nominated for an Oscar in his last few to come back and be in his new one, American Hustle. The film is a fictionalization of the ABSCAM FBI sting of the 1970s starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner. That cast alone is enough to get my butt in a seat, but there’s a trailer now too so let’s check that out.
