The State of the Universe: The Current State of, and Speculation on What’s To Come In, The Marvel Cinematic Universe **Updated**

Marvel

I’ve been thinking a lot about the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately. There has been nine feature films to date as well as five short films and sixteen episodes (out of twenty-two) of the television series _Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D._. That’s a lot of storytelling right there so as much for my own benefit as for yours I’m going to run down the current state of the universe as it stands right now, immediately post _Captain America: The Winter Soldier_ and after episode 16 of _Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D._, as I see it and offer some speculation as to where things are going.

This is obviously going to contain spoilers for, well, _everything_ in the MCU so far so my recommendation is to get caught up before you read this. Either that or no complaining. I’m also making predictions about what I think is going to happen moving forward so if I’m right, and I all but know that I am about one thing in particular, then consider this your spoiler warning.

Also go get yourself a cup of coffee or something because this is going to take a while.

Ok? Ok. Let’s do this.

Awesome: Benicio del Toro Joins Guardians of the Galaxy and The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Benicio del Toro

Holy Moly!

[Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood](http://www.deadline.com/2013/06/benicio-del-toro-takes-lead-role-in-marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy/):

> Benicio Del Toro has joined the killer cast of the James Gunn-directed Marvel Studios franchise launcher Guardians Of The Galaxy. They are keeping his role under wraps, but he’s playing a character that is built to be part of future Marvel films, which means he has signed a deal with options that put him into multiple movies.

So let’s the speculation begin: _who do you think he’s going to be?_ Could he be Thanos? Or Rocket Racoon? Or someone out of left field?

Either way, Marvel keeps adding more talent to its universe and that’s a good thing. I can’t think of a franchise that I am more excited to see more films from, not Bond or Star Wars or anything.

Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan Joins Guardians of the Galaxy Cast

Karen Gillan

In more Doctor Who related News, Former Co-Star Karen Gillan has joined the cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Well that’s very exciting.

[The Hoolywood Reporter broke the news](http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/doctor-who-star-joins-marvels-561293) the other day. We don’t yet know exactly who she’ll be playing but we do know she’ll be the lead female villain.

I rather liked Gillan as Amy Pond and I think she might be great in this part. She’s feisty and I think she can carry the bad guy vibe pretty well and it’ll be cool to see her playing off Michael Rooker and Lee Pace (who are the other bad guys).

What do you guys think?

Awesome: Chris Pratt Cast as Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy

Holy crap Chris Pratt has been cast as Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy. From [Deadline](http://m.deadline.com/2013/02/chris-pratt-getting-guardians-of-the-galaxy-lead/):

> After a long search, Marvel Studios has found its lead for its next big superhero franchise, the James Gunn-directed Guardians Of The Galaxy. I hear the role will go to Chris Pratt, the Moneyball star who bulked up and played one of the hero Navy SEALs in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. The role is Star-Lord, the Guardians leader who is the offspring of a human mother and an alien father. A puffier Pratt plays Andy Dwyer on the NBC series Parks And Recreation. He certainly has the charisma to hold the screen.

This is most definitely good news. Chris Pratt is one of the best parts of Parks and Rec, and he has been a great supporting player in Moneyball, Zero Dark Thirty and everything else I’ve seen him in. He’s got the bulk and badassery cred from ZDT as well as the comic timing so I think this is going to work out well. In fact he might be a perfect fit for James Gunn’s style.

Plus the big rumour is that Iron Man will head into space at some point during Iron Man 3 and potentially meet the guardians, so maybe we’ll get to see him this summer instead of waiting for next.

Sweet.
