New XBOX to be Announced 21st May

New XBOX

Soooooooo this is a thing that’s happening. Given how underwhelming the PS4 announcement was, and also considering the rumours of things like it not being backwards compatible and always needs to be online I can’t say that I am too terribly excited.

Which is a shame because I’d like to be excited. I like my XBOX 360, but if it turns out that Microsoft is selling a replacement instead of an upgrade I’ll probably go back to PC gaming and never look back.

Well, maybe not never.

Awesome: Marvel Confirms Daredevil Rights Now Back In The Fold

20130423-120815.jpg

[According to Newsarama](http://www.newsarama.com/film/kevin-feige-daredevil-marvel-studios.html):

> Speaking with Newsarama Monday at the Iron Man 3 press junket, the Marvel Studios president of production told us at the end of our conversation that, as previously speculated, the Daredevil rights are now under the Disney/Marvel umbrella. We directly asked Feige if the reports that Marvel Studios now had the rights to Daredevil were accurate, to which he replied, “To Daredevil? Yes.”

> In August, it was reported that previous rights-holder Fox had a deadline of Oct. 10 to put a Daredevil film into production before the rights returned to Marvel, a deadline that then passed. Though it was widely assumed this meant the character was now under Marvel control, no official announcement followed.

I know some of you only have experience with Daredevil by way of the 2003 movie, which a lot of people don’t like, but the character is great. Think Batman, but without the money and with actual super powers.

So I chalk this up as a good thing. The question now is, what are they going to do with him?

Not Awesome: Futurama To End Again in Sept

Fry + Bender

Dan Snierson for [Entertainment Weekly](http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/04/22/futurama-not-renewed-comedy-central/)

> The Planet Express ship will soon make its final delivery.

> Comedy Central has decided not to renew Futurama, which means that the 31st-century-set animated comedy will end its 140-episode run on Sept. 4. The final 13 episodes, which represent the second half of season 7, begin airing on June 19 at 10 p.m.

> Futurama is no stranger to cancellation, of course: The series aired from 1999 to 2003 before Fox sent Fry & Co. into oblivion. After thriving in reruns on Adult Swim, Futurama was relaunched in 2007 with four-direct-to-DVD movies that Comedy Central ran in half-hour increments as a 16-episode fifth season in 2008-09. Comedy Central subsequently ordered a sixth season of 26 episodes, which aired in 2010-11, and a seventh season of 26 episodes, the first half of which debuted in 2012.

> The news did not come as a shock to executive producer David X. Cohen and creator Matt Groening, who had thought their space explorations were ending three previous times (after the Fox run, after the four movies, and after Comedy Central’s first 26-episode order). “I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news,” Cohen tells EW. “It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.”

This is sad news for one of my all time favourite shows, however as David X Cohen said it’s not entirely unexpected. I’m sure they’ll go out on some amazing gag though so there is that to look forward to. Not to mention endless re-watching on Netflix.

Fan Expo Bonus: Nichelle Nichols Talks About The Interracial Kiss

There are more photos coming later tonight but as a quick bonus to tide you over, I took some video with my phone at the Nichelle Nichols Q&A. The quality isn’t amazing, but this is a clip of her telling the story about the first interracial kiss on television between Uhura and Kirk.

It’s a pretty cool story so I thought I would share it. I wish I could share her whole Q&A session, she was a blast to listen to. Funny and sassy and clearly at ease, and we all loved her for it. Hit the jump for a very poorly shot video.

Fan Expo Vancouver: Day Two

There’s something very special about day two of the Fan Expo. I noticed it last year too, but I put it down to only discovering that I was really into comics in the second part of Sunday. This year was very different – once I’d sorted out David Prowse’s autograph on my limited edition translucent-helmet electrified Darth Vader figurine (OH YES), I headed straight for the art and spent most of Saturday picking through my favourite pieces. Somehow, today was far more relaxed (even if, at times, it didn’t feel any less busy) and I had a great time chatting with all the cool people that surrounded me, as well as waiting two hours to again meet David Hayter, AKA Solid Snake (who jointly holds the title of Nicest Celebrity Ever with Micha Collins).

So, thanks to the organisers for making today go much more smoothly, and a huge thank you to all the cosplayers who posed instantly when I went in for my photo. See you next year!

Review: Oblivion

Oblivion

Do you ever read or watch science fiction? Have you ever had your mind blown at some plot twist or big reveal? Has a story ever made you think about things in this world in a new and different way?

Oblivion is a film that really wants to have this kind of impact on you but doesn’t. That’s not to say that it’s a bad movie just that while it is _good_, or rather _pretty okay_, it isn’t _great_.

FanExpo Vancouver Cosplay Photos

Today at Fan Expo I spent a great deal of time walking around with my friend and talented photographer Mark. Together we took a boat load of cosplay photos. Well, to be fair, he took all the photos and I helped wrangle people. But either way let’s face it: there’s lots of cool things going on at FanExpo (Simon [already posted some photos and his take on the day](https://awesomefriday.ca/2013/04/fan-expo-vancouver-day-one/)
) but the cosplay is what you want to see photos of. There’s nearly 50 photos after the jump so get comfy!

Here’s a beautiful Lara Croft to get you started, the rest are after the jump.

Fan Expo Vancouver: Day One

Owww.

Sorry, in times like these, my back gains a voice of its own. I’m pretty sure that buying advance tickets should mean that you don’t have to wade through three line-ups in 90 minutes just to get through the main door.

Grumble.

Anyway, I’ve just got back from a long day pacing the aisles of Fan Expo Vancouver, checking out the shiny merchandise and trying not to gawp *too* much at the cosplay (pretty sure I failed). It’s always a strange mixture of feelings, being jammed in with a mixed crowd of average Joes and Super Heroes/Villains/Animals/Robots. It’s *so* busy, and everything is *so* focused on the price tags, that it’s very easy to let cynicism overtake as the day’s main emotion. However, what saves it is the subject. Actually, it’s the people and their *love* for the subject. What Fan Expo gives you – me – is a weekend of pure relief, from not resisting the urge to talk about the colour scheme of an X-Wing or comment on the merits of the ninth Doctor. Really, I’m not in the same league of geekdom/nerdvana as many of today’s willfully obsessed attendees, but it was such a pleasure to absorb their enthusiasm for a short while.

So, here’s a collection of tasty snaps from my camera. Matt will have plenty to add here, so watch this space!
