Joan Rivers, 81, Has Died

Joan-Rivers-Keynote-Speaker

Actress, comedienne, author, trailblazer and icon, Joan Rivers has died.  During a minor procedure to check her vocal chords last week she stopped breathing and was taken to hospital following cardiac arrest.  Her daughter Melissa released this statement:

“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother. Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”

Legends – Series Premiere Tonight on Bravo (Canada)

Sean Bean, Ali Larter, Tina Majorino star in the new drama series Legends that premieres in Canada on Bravo tonight at 9pm.  Based on the novel Legends: A Novel of Dissimulation by Robert Littell for which he won the LA Times Book Prize in 2005.  Developed by Howard Gordon (24, Homeland), Jeffrey Nachmanoff (The Day After Tomorrow, Traitor, The Tourist) & Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Fifty Shades of Grey).  A real mixed bag of experience, should be interesting.

Also on Bravo the 2nd season of Graceland is coming to a close.  If you haven’t seen this show yet it’s something that would make a great end of summer binge-watch.

66th Primetime Emmys: Water Cooler Edition – Sofia Vergara Rotating on a Pedestal

Late Night with Seth Meyers - Season 1

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards were held on a Monday and a month earlier this year to accommodate both the VMAs and NFL season.  But it’s okay, you’ve seen this show before.  No, really.  Seth Meyers gave a fantastic monologue but beyond that it was pretty much a lot of the same as last year and the year before.  I was so bored that I couldn’t even muster up annoyance at the fact that the President of TV (as Stephen Colbert called him) literally put Sofia Vergara onto a rotating pedestal so that people would have something to look at while he spoke.   Continue reading “66th Primetime Emmys: Water Cooler Edition – Sofia Vergara Rotating on a Pedestal”

MTV VMAs: Water Cooler Edition – (Nearly) Flawless Feminism & Nostalgic Nineties

The only thing you absolutely need to know about the 2014 MTV VMAs is Beyoncé.  No one does it like Beyoncé.  100 years from now when historians look back at the most influential artists it will be Beyoncé.  Don’t believe me?  Beyoncé was receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.  The Beatles, David Bowie, Madonna, Janet Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Beastie Boys, U2, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, now Beyoncé.  Last year JT won and did a mind blowing set in which every song I said, “Oh yeah, I remember this one!”.  Beyoncé has had #1 hits since 1997 (she was 16).  There are any number of songs to draw from.  Instead her performance was only from the album she surprise released in December.  And you couldn’t take your eyes off the screen.

Bow down, Bitches indeed. Continue reading “MTV VMAs: Water Cooler Edition – (Nearly) Flawless Feminism & Nostalgic Nineties”

Doctor Who Does What? In The Where? Or Is It When?

New Doctor Who costume

I’ve always assumed I was a nerd, but lately I’ve been finding out that might not be the case.  I don’t mean “nerd” in a bad way or even “nerd” in the now we’re cool let’s put it on a t-shirt way.  More in the “Ooh, that’s a bit more curious than most people would be and hey are these books sorted by literary period?” kind of way.  There doesn’t seem to be a Broad-Spectrum-of-Interests-in-a-Variety-of-Things Con.  Likely because it would make a terrible acronym. Beyoncé & Jay-Z “On the Run” Coming to HBO September 20th

This fall’s first “event television” is coming September 20th to HBO.  It’s a two hour concert special with 40 songs from the Jay-Z and Beyoncé On The Run tour and I promise it will be all anyone talks about for days before and after.  The Carters are collectively worth an estimated half a billion dollars and while they’ve been the topic of much gossip since the infamous Met Gala elevator incident there’s no doubt that these two put on one hell of a show.

If you missed the best trailer for a movie that doesn’t exist directed by Melina Matsoukas starring Sean Penn, Don Cheadle, Guillermo Diaz, Emmy Rossum, Jake Gyllenhaal, Blake Lively, Rashida & Kidada Jones that was released for the tour back in May check it out… Continue reading “Beyoncé & Jay-Z “On the Run” Coming to HBO September 20th”

Break out the allen keys and crank up the Hives!  In the meantime I’ll be googling other Swedish references.  Don’t miss a new episode tonight on NBC.

Play It Again, Dick

Veronica-Mars-veronica-mars-and-dick-casablancas-31445401-1500-1200A long time ago we used to be friends… and then after 3 seasons Veronica Mars got cancelled.  Apparently 2007 wasn’t ready for a neo-noir CW drama.  For years fans of the series campaigned for a movie and when creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell launched a kickstarter in 2013 they broke records.  They raised their goal of $2 Million in 10 hours, and went on to raise $5.7 Million total.

Someone at the CW noticed that the Marshmallows are a force to be reckoned with.  Which is why they’re launching a CW Seed web series! Continue reading “Play It Again, Dick”
