Welcome to the news for the week of 19 October 2019. It feels like most of the big news is casting news and that The Matrix 4 is a real thing that is really happening. Sam Raimi is in back and the director’s chair and so is Robert Eggers.
All in all, it’s been a good week! Let’s take a look!
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just announced that Neil Patrick Harris will host the 87th Academy Awards (the Oscars) on February 22, 2015. Last year Ellen Degeneres hosted and had the most viewers in 14 years. Here’s hoping NPH can keep the streak alive.
The most surefire way to make me tune out a book’s pitch is to include the words “marriage” or “mother”. Which is partially why I never bothered picking up Gone Girl, the novel by Gillian Flynn released in 2012. The other is that almost as soon as I became aware of the book I found out it would be adapted for the screen starring Ben Affleck and directed by David Fincher. Fincher has been one of my favourite directors since Se7en(1995) so I knew I would be seeing the movie. Over the past five years I’ve made a concerted effort to go into the movies by my favourite filmmakers knowing as little as possible about them. I cut myself off at one trailer, if that, and never listen to any interviews. It can be really difficult, especially for a project like this that was a book for 2 years before the movie was released and many people feel that spoilers are fair game.
But I made it. I waited all the way until the second day of opening weekend and the only thing I knew going into it was that Ben Affleck shows his penis.
If you don’t know anything about the movie and plan on seeing it I recommend you a) go to your nearest theatre immediately & b) stop reading this article until you have. Continue reading “Gone Girl – Veni, Vidi, Vindictis”
@narcissusholmes – My incredible Guardians of the Galaxy makeup. See it!
One of the most fun parts of twitter is getting to see the pictures the actors take of what goes on behind the scenes. In addition to Nick Holmes’ photo of the great makeup job on Guardians of the Galaxy here’s some of what you may have missed this week…
Seth McFarlane’s first feature film Ted was a great little film. Not perfect, but it latched onto a story trope we’d seen before (grown man needs to grow out of his immature ways, is held back by immature childhood best friend) and took its to its logical extreme (best friend is his childhood toy) and the result was both R-Rated hilarious and heartfelt but without getting too bogged down in “ugh, I’ve seen this before.” It didn’t hurt either that McFarlane’s voice performance as Ted was inspired as though he was getting every r-rated joke he’d been wanting to do on family Guy out all at once.
McFarlane’s second feature takes aim at the Wild West. It’s still R-rated and it’s still a comedy but where Ted managed to break the mold _A Million Ways To Die In The West_ stays pretty firmly in its mold. That’s not to say it’s not funny. I laughed a bunch of times. Not enough times though, and the rest of the time I was bored.
Hot on the heels of [all the character posters](https://awesomefriday.ca/2014/01/character-posters-for-seth-mcfarlanes-a-million-ways-to-die-in-the-west/) we get a red band trailer for Seth McFarlane’s _A Million Ways To Die In The West_.
Seth McFarlane is the undisputed king of television, or at least Fox Television, and his first big film _Ted_ was a huge hit for good reason: it was great. His second effort, the western comedy _”A Million Ways To Die In The West”_ is out this year and here are some character posters he released on twitter this morning.
