Here’s a true story. When The Witches came out in 1990, it scared the crap out of me, and I don’t think I have seen it since. That might be something I should rectify now, as Robert Zemeckis has directed a new adaptation of the Roald Dahl story.
The big question here is obviously “can Anne Hathaway live up to Angelica Juston’s performance?” I don’t have an answer, but she does seem to be having fun with it. The Witches is full to the brim with talent with both Octavia Spencer and Stanley Tucci making appearances in the trailer, as well as Jahzir Kadeem Bruno (best known for Atlanta) and narration by Chris Rock.
Behind the camera, there’s no shortage of talent either, with Zemeckis directing, a screenplay by him, Kenya Barris, and Guillermo del Toro, with del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón also in producer roles.
Maybe most excitingly, this film isn’t headed for theatres! It’s headed to HBO Max (and Crave in Canada almost certainly) on October 22nd, just in time for Halloween, so we can all watch it without fearing for our lives!
