Matt’s 2017 Oscar Thoughts and Predictions

The Academy Awards are upon us once again. It’s easy to be cynical about the Oscars, whether it’s because your favourite films never win or because of the endless campaigning, or because it’s, or because of the whole “rich people giving each other statues” thing, but I still kinda like them.

This year the nominees are mostly good, so here they all are along with some thoughts, opinions, and a prediction or two.

The Oscars are being held on the 26th of February. Join us on the day for our 6th annual liveblog of the ceremony!

INCOMING: The Annual Awesome Friday Oscars Liveblog Starts Soon

Oscars

It’s been a slow start to 2015 for all of us. That changes today. Here comes the 2015 Oscars or, as Matt so eloquently refers to it, rich people giving their friends golden statues. And we’ll be there every step of the way.

The main show starts at 5:30pm PT, and we’ll start wittering away from twenty minutes or so beforehand on the site liveblog. As you can image from [Matt’s reaction to the nominations](https://awesomefriday.ca/2015/01/the-2015-oscar-nominations-or-the-year-i-fall-out-of-love-with-the-oscars/), it’s likely to be a rather sarcastic affair that is sure to reference the absence of *The Lego Movie* roughly 2,428 times. Join us and join in!

Kat’s going to be giving her own spin on the event on [her Twitter](https://twitter.com/katarnett), and Matt and I will more than likely be posting to the [Awesome Friday Twitter](https://twitter.com/AwesomeFridayCa) too, so you have many options for your Oscars viewing pleasure.

See you soon!

The 2015 Oscar Nominations (Or The Year I Fall Out Of Love With The Oscars)

Oscars

This morning the nominations for the 87th Annual Academy Awards wre announced and boy howdy were they ever _bull-fucking-shit_. You can take to [my twitter stream to see some of my immediate reactions](https://twitter.com/posterboy81/status/555746769179398144) but basically the nominations don’t make a lot of sense to me.

Selma, a movie that is critically acclaimed and features an amazing performance by David Oyelowo and fantastic direction by director Ava DuVernay was nominated for best picture and best song, but literally nothing else.

The Lego Movie was left out of the best Animated Feature race, but Big Hero 6 made it in.

The Academy can nominate as many as ten films for best picture but nly nominated 8. They included The Imitation Game, and The Theory of Everything, (which are both fine, but not great) but left out Gone Girl, Nightcrawler, The Lego Movie, and tons of others.

Tilda Swinton, who had three amazing performances this year, didn’t get nominated. Bradley Cooper is nominated for the third year in a row despite being in a film that as far as I can tell is a bore. Someone must really like him.

All 20 acting nominees are white. 7 of the 8 best picture nominees are about white male heroes. That’s bad even by the standards of the old mens “we hate change” club that is the Academy.

I could go on but I won’t. I will say that there are some good things happening. JK Simmons is nominated! Wes Anderson has his first ever Best Director nod! I’ve always liked the oscars and I’ve enjoyed live blogging the ceremony the last few years but this years nominees are all… “safe”. Which is a real shame. This might be the year I finally fall out of love with the Oscars.

Hit the jump to see the full list but despair as the good is far outweighed by the bad.

Host the Oscars? NPH Would Totally Do That.

Screen Shot 2014-10-15 at 2.35.24 PM

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just announced that Neil Patrick Harris will host the 87th Academy Awards (the Oscars) on February 22, 2015.  Last year Ellen Degeneres hosted and had the most viewers in 14 years.  Here’s hoping NPH can keep the streak alive.

Awesome: Check Out The Nominee Title Cards from This Years Oscars

ORIGINAL_SCREENPLAY__BlueJasmine_v1alt

One of the cooler things at this years Academy Awards wasn’t anything that happened on stage, it was on the monitors as nominees were announced. Sounds silly but each nominee had an amazingly designed title card for each category. They were created by Mill+, the firm which has been doing design work for the show for the past few years.

I’ve included some of my favourites (including the Best Screenplay Card for _Blue Jasmine_ above).

It’s that time again folks for us to sit in judgement of choices that millionaires make as they give each other solid gold statues.

You can check [Matt’s predictions here](https://awesomefriday.ca/2014/03/matts-2014-oscar-predictions/) but in the mean time sit back, relax, and enjoy your flight.

86th Oscars Awards Nominations Announced: Gravity and American Hustle Lead The Pack

86th Oscars

The Academy Awards Nominations were announced this morning and, unsurprisingly, _American Hustle_ leads the pack with ten nods. Slightly surprisingly, _Gravity_ has the same number of nominations. Also slightly surprisingly, _12 Years a Slave_ has one less with nine. Also unsurprisingly, _The Wolf of Wall Street_ has just five.

Hit the jump to see the full list of millionaires who might receive the most coveted golden statues.
