Sports movies often have a bit of a stigma in that if you make a football movie then while football fans will probably want to see it there’s no guarantee that anyone else will. The best sports movies get around this by doing something pretty clever: not really being about sports.
Draft Day is one of these. It’s a well put together drama with a great cast doing what they do best in a movie that happens to be set in the office of an NFL football team.
Remember a couple of years ago how none of us really knew how much of a badass that Liam Neeson is? And then he made _Taken_ and now he’s in all the action movies?
3 Days to Kill could do that for Kevin Costner if it’s good. Which it might be.

I kind of missed this one last week but there’s a reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise, created by [recently deceased autho Tom Clancy](https://awesomefriday.ca/2013/10/not-awesome-tom-clancy-has-passed-away/). The books have been brought to the screen a bunch of times and Jack Ryan has been played by a bunch of actors. This time around it’s Chris Pine and it appears to a) not really resemble Jack Ryan and b) look like it might be fun anyway. Let’s watch!
I feel like somewhere here there was a great movie waiting to happen. That’s not to immediately say that Man of Steel is _bad_, but I do very much feel that it could have been quite a bit better than it is. There are a lot of things to like here but the film is hampered by its writing, both in terms of dialogue and pacing.
Should you see it? Yeah, it’s fucking gorgeous to watch. Will you enjoy it? I’m not really sure, and here’s why.
Wow, between Star Trek and this it’s turned out to be a pretty damn good day for us nerds.
So let me be the millionth person to say this: this looks like it might be really fucking good. Everything from the tone to the scope of the plot to the performances to the look of things, this looks like it might be _really_ fucking good and I hope that it is.
Second, I kind of feel sorry for Zack Snyder if it does because while he’s made a couple of crap movies but he’s also made a couple of good movies and if this turns out to be good people are going to say “well that’s because Nolan was involved”. Now, Nolan being involved certainly couldn’t hurt, but he also didn’t direct or style this.
Third, I mean just _look at it_. It looks gorgeous.
