A stellar cast of amazing actors? Check. A plot to destroy the world? Check. An American agent forming a deniable team of badasses to take on the threat? Check. Each badass has a distinct speciality? Check. Said American agent having a badass nickname? Check.
The 355 hits all the checkboxes that an action movie should but with one difference: the team is all women. I, for one, think this looks awesome. It looks dumb as a bag of hammers and exactly up my alley. Let’s take a look.
This looks good, right? Or at least like the good kind of bad. It looks like exactly the kind of cliche-ridden auctioneer that would normally be populated by a bunch of high profile male actors, and I kind of love that it’s that but with women.
The idea for a series akin to Mission: Impossible or James Bond was initially proposed to director Simon Kinberg by Jessica Chastain (they worked together on X-Men: Dark Phoenix), and they took the idea and ran with it. Kinberg is an experienced producer and writer, but this is only his second directorial effort. I am going to call expectations on that front a wash.
It helps that each of the five actors in this thing are extremely talented, and honestly, I kind of can’t wait to give it it a look. As of right now this is scheduled for a January 15th release in theatres, but I’m going to go ahead and add this to the list of films I’m assuming will end up being pushed back further into 2021 due to the …. well, you know.
The 355 stars Diane Kruger, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, and Fan Bingbing, along with token men Sebastian Stan and Édgar Ramírez. Here is the official synopsis, as well as the first poster:
When a top-secret weapon falls into mercenary hands, wild card CIA agent Mason “Mace” Brown (Oscar®-nominated actress Jessica Chastain) will need to join forces with rival badass German agent Marie (Diane Kruger, In the Fade), former MI6 ally and cutting-edge computer specialist Khadijah (Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong’o), and skilled Colombian psychologist Graciela (Oscar® winner Penélope Cruz) on a lethal, breakneck mission to retrieve it, while also staying one-step ahead of a mysterious woman, Lin Mi Sheng (Bingbing Fan, X-Men: Days of Future Past), who is tracking their every move.
As the action rockets around the globe from the cafes of Paris to the markets of Morocco to the wealth and glamour of Shanghai, the quartet of women will forge a tenuous loyalty that could protect the world—or get them killed.
