Kamala Khan is one of the most popular and important new characters in the Marvel comics universe. It was previously announced that she’d be getting her own Disney+ series and now they’ve cast Canadian newcomer Iman Vellani in the title role.
Deadline has the news. Vellani has no credits to her name as yet, but served at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival as part of the Next Wave committee, made up of a dozen diverse and film-loving teens who tagged films in the program they thought might resonate with their peers.
Ms Marvel the character is a Pakistani American teenager from New Jersey who takes on the name because she is inspired by her favourite hero, Carol Danvers. The first volume of her series won a Hugo award for Best Graphic Story in 2015.
Ms Marvel the series will join a whole slate of announced Disney+ series, including the recently announced Tatiana Maslany led She-Hulk, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Falcon & Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, and the upcoming WandaVision.
