Mulan is out, and it’s … not great. Also, there’s a pandemic on, so you should be watching movies at home. So here are three Disney movies that I like, from three different eras, that you could totally watch instead.

Fantasia (1940)
Everyone has a favourite early Disney movie, and Fantasia is mine. When I was a kid, we wore out our VHS tape of this movie. The melding of music and animation captured my imagination in a way that the narrative film just didn’t at the time.
In hindsight, it’s almost certainly the reason I have had a lifelong love of classical music and film scores, and it’s also one of the most famous depictions of Mickey Mouse, which helps.
Aladdin (1992)
Aladdin is an obvious choice, but then again, all the films from the 90s Disney Renaissance are obvious choices. Aladdin has some of my favourite Disney songs and an iconic support performance by Robin Williams. So if you haven’t watched it lately, well, why not?
Big Hero Six (2014)
This might not be the most obvious choice, but Big Hero 6 is a legitimately great movie. Its main fault is that the story might feel a little familiar, but at the same time, it features an entire team of positive role models, a story that highlights the virtues of science, intelligence, and creativity, and a legitimately moving central relationship.
Plus, the overall theme of the film being how we deal with grief is fantastically executed. If you missed it, you should definitely give it a look. If you didn’t, now is a perfect time to watch it again.
