The final film in the Disney Era Star Wars Trilogy, which promises to bring to a conclusion the story started in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi is coming this December and this week Lucasfilm finally released a full-blown trailer for it.
Since we’re all bunch of nerds around here I figured it might be neat to take a closer look at that trailer, and in the process, I grabbed more than sixty high-definition stills.
Just a couple of notes before we get started. First, this will be spread over several pages to keep load times down. Apologies for that.
Second, I am not going to speculate too much. Disney is the master at obfuscating the details in trailers (see: Thor’s Eyepatch in the Thor: Ragnarok trailers. Or rather, don’t) so I am assuming that there’s some pretty significant stuff left out or cut together differently. I also don’t have any inside knowledge or anything like that. Anything I do say will be just that: speculation.
Third, you can click on each image to see it bigger!
And fourth, in case you live under a rock, here is the trailer again:
Oh goddamned it is so good. Let’s get started.
I just really like the Lucasfilm logo, ok?
The forest noises here, interrupted only by Rey’s footfalls and lightsaber, are fantastic and soothing.
If you look closely in these last three images, as Rey is running she defects a blaster shot. It comes from what looks like a training droid following her on her run through the jungle. Also, I assume that helmet will be a toy soon.
All that running full tilt and she’s leaping over a chasm. John Boyega as Finn giving voice-over saying it’s an instinct. A feeling. Maybe she is learning to trust her instincts here.
I get the feeling this is a very early sequence in the film. as in, maybe it’s the first sequence?
Hard cut to Rey leaping around some enormous mechanical ruins. Perhaps this is later in the film and she is putting the earlier training to good use.
Our first full shot of our hero. Those look like new robes to me. Rise of Skywalker takes place a year after The Last Jedi, and Rey has been a fast-developing force user in the story so far. I wonder how far she’s come in that time. Perhaps the ordeal Rey went through in The Last Jedi has spurred her on in her training?
Either way, it’s great to see Daisy Ridley again.
Fade from Rey to Finn as his voice-over says that he believes the force brought them together. You know what, I love that sentiment. Also, I hope those binoculars (quadnoculars?) become a toy soon.
Another wide shot of Rey running through that gorgeous jungle.
It’s at this point I’d like to, uh, point out that the music in this trailer is great.
Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron takes over the voice over. "We’re not alone," he says over this crowd shot, which I didn’t notice until I captured these stills is a large group of people surrounding Billy Dee Williams, returned to the franchise as Lando Calrissian.
Is he giving orders or spinning a yarn? Or both?
"Good people will fight if we lead them," says Poe over this first shot of Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico. I am so glad she is back. She was in many ways the beating heart of the last movie and I adore her. This shot comes with the "good people will fight" part of the voice-over, which is perfect.
Also, hey there Dominic Monaghan. Your part is as yet unannounced, but I see you there. Is that Billie Lourd with you? I can’t quite recognize the face.
Finn, Poe, and Chewie standing beside Poe’s X-Wing in the jungle. This shot comes with the "if we lead them" part of the voice over.
I’m not going to lie, I am a little disappointed that Finn isn’t wearing the jacket that Poe gave him, but I do like the new costumes.
