A 25-year-old man in the UK was the first person to record and illegally distribute _Furious 6_ when it was released. He was caught and tried and today was sentenced to 33 months jail time. so in case you were wondering if there’s a real penalty for piracy the answer is “yes”; or at least it is in the UK.
The kid from West Midlands saw _Furious 6_ on opening day last year and recorded in the theatre. He then uploaded the file and once he realized his was the first online he even bragged about it on Facebook saying _”Seven billion people and I was the first. F*** you Universal Pictures”_
Let’s not beat around the bush here: this kid seems like an asshole. He was eventually caught because the tag on the file matched his handle on Plenty of Fish (couldn’t make that up if I tried).
Universal is on record as conceding that he didn’t make much money from the piracy (around 1000 pounds from selling burned copies) but that the loss of revenue was in the ballpark of 2.3 Million pounds. It also seems like he was punished in part for his brazen attitude as his motivation was apparently “street cred” in the piracy community.
So there you have it kids; don’t pirate movies because you could go to jail for real. Especially if you’re a jackass about it.
