For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
2014 brought about the passing of many of our most beloved stars. Sadly today was no exception. Edward Herrmann, 71, died this morning in hospital. He had been in the ICU fighting brain cancer the past 3 and a half weeks. His illness seems to have been a shock to his co-stars in the Gilmore Girls family. Kelly Bishop was contacted by TVLine and said of her former television spouse “I think everyone who knew or worked with Ed found him to be absolutely delightful… Everything looks a little dim, as if the lights went down.”
As a devoted fan of Gilmore Girls I was shocked by the news. It seems I’m not alone. In the four hours since I first wrote a small tribute to him on my tumblr stating “Friday night dinner will never be the same” it has been reblogged 4,000 times. He was loved, and many loyal followers of the show seem to feel as if they’ve lost a grandfather.
One of my favourite quotes is by a Scottish poet named Thomas Campbell, of death he said “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” So while many of our brightest lights were extinguished this year we can keep them close through the characters they brought to life.
