Social commentary or marketing stunt? Probably both.
So here’s the poster in question via Page Six:
Let’s get this out-of-the-way: this isn’t the poster you submit to the MPAA and actually expect to get it approved. Not in America, a country founded by prudes. This is a sexy poster and you can clearly see her nipples and America is not OK with that. You know what America is OK with? A sexy (but fully clothed) woman holding a gun.
Yes, America is a country more afraid of nipples than it is of guns, yet only one of those things is routinely used to kill people.
So hopefully this poster was released as a piece of self-contained social commentary. More likely it was released to cause a media shit storm because of the nipples vs. guns thing though, which I’ve obviously totally perpetuated, generating more buzz for the movie’s release in August.
I guess that makes it win-win? I guess?
Either way it’s an awesome poster.
