It has been kind of a slow week for movie trailers, but HBO and Netflix have released some series trailers that are definitely worth taking a look at. This week we have trailers for The Mandela Effect, Bloodshot, and Adopt a Highway as well as HBO’s​ Watchmen, the final season of Silicon Valley, and 2020 series The Outsider, and finally, Netflix has released a trailer for the third season of The Crown featuring a whole new cast.

Oh, and a B-Movie franchise called "Star Wars" released a trailer as well.

The Mandela Effect is one of group false memory. Many people misremember the spelling of The Berenstain Bears or when Nelson Mandela died. It’s a fascinating thing, and someone has made a thriller about it.

Sure, I’ll watch that. Here’s the synopsis.

A man becomes obsessed with facts and events that have been collectively misremembered by thousands of people. Believing the phenomena to be the symptom of something larger, his obsession eventually leads him to question reality itself.

The Mandela Effect will be in theaters and on VOD on 6th December, 2019.

Bloodshot

Bloodshot is a comic that I haven’t actually written yet but from the trailer, I think I might need to check it out. It has a real Groundhog Day crossed with Memento crossed with Jason X vibe and I’m into it. Here’s a synopsis:

Based on the bestselling comic book, Vin Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a soldier recently killed in action and brought back to life as the superhero Bloodshot by the RST corporation. With an army of nanotechnology in his veins, he’s an unstoppable force –stronger than ever and able to heal instantly. But in controlling his body, the company has sway over his mind and memories, too. Now, Ray doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not – but he’s on a mission to find out.

My feeling here is that if this movie takes itself seriously it might kind of be ok, but if it leans into the weirdness of its premise then it might be a ton of fun. Either way, we will find out on 21st February.

Adopt a Highway

Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus, THe Invitation, Upgrade) is a gifted actor you should be paying attention to but this time around he is taking his first shot at being behind the camera. I, for one, can’t wait to see what he can do.

Russ Millings has just been released from prison after serving 21 years for a 3rd strike conviction for possessing an ounce of marijuana. As he tries to adapt to a world he doesn’t recognize – including trying to learn how to use the internet – he finds an abandoned baby in a dumpster behind the fast food restaurant where he works as a dishwasher. Unsure of what to do, and caught between impulses of kindness and panic, Russ soon realizes this could be his chance at redemption.

This seems like it might be right up my alley. It lands in theatres and on demand on 1st November.

Watchmen, Series Trailer

(Note: Watchmen premiered this past weekend and if you didn’t see it you should definitely skip this trailer and go watch the first episode instead.)

Watchmen‘s premiere was absolutely stellar and I really can’t wait to see how this story shakes out. The show seems firmly committed to whatever it’s trying to do and isn’t interested in over-explaining things, and I loved it. Plus, the Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross score is fantastic and I kind of want to watch it again just for the scene transitions.

Watchmen is airing on Sundays and you should definitely be watching it.

Silicon Valley, Season 6

Here’s a fun game, if you know someone who works in software development, show them Silicon Valley and see how many scenes they cringe at because they lived through it. Also, the show is hilarious so just watch it regardless. The sixth season starts on October 27th (this coming Sunday).

The Outsider

We still seem to be in the golden age of Stephen King adaptations with HBO adapting his book The Outsider. I’ve never read this one but the cast is stellar and from what I understand there is some great King weirdness, so I’m in.

The 10-episode series follows police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), as he sets out to investigate the mutilated body of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson found in the Georgia woods. The mysterious circumstances surrounding this horrifying crime leads Ralph, still grieving the recent death of his own son, to bring in unorthodox private investigator Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), whose uncanny abilities he hopes will help explain the unexplainable.

We’ll all get to find out on 12th January 2020.

The Crown, Season 3

The Crown might be the best thing that Netflix has made for a variety of reasons but the casting has always been top-notch. Season 3 will jump years ahead and, as previously reported, instead of ageing up the cast they have replaced everyone. I love this. Especially since the new cast is similarly great. Everyone is excited that Olivia Colman is the new Elizabeth and Helena Bonham-Carter as Margaret, but here’s a shout out for Tobias Menzies and Ben Daniels as Price Philip and Lord Snowdon respectively. Also, this season will get into the 80s in which Gillian Anderson will play Margaret Thatcher.

I’m excited. Are you excited? I’m excited.

Season 3 will​ be released on 17th November.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Holy shit Lucasfilm & Disney know how to cut a trailer together. This trailer does exactly what a good trailer should: I am now super excited by the flashes I’ve seen, the tone on display, the arrangement of the score, and most importantly I don’t have any real solid ideas about the plot (although, I do about certain scenes).

I may have teared up at one moment in this thing. It’s just that damned good. I really hope that the movie itself lives up to the expectations set up by The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, the latter of which really shifted the story and characters in ways that I really hope aren’t undone.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be in theatres on 20th December and I, along with everyone else in the world, will be there.
