Let’s Talk About The ‘Star Wars’ Poster

Here it is folks. Let’s obsess a little over it.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Let me first say that, as is generally the case with Star Wars posters, this is way too fucking busy. It’s actually a fairly well executed level of busy, but still way too busy for my liking. I don’t actually dislike it, I just wish it were a little more focussed.

Second, look at all the old people! Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are right there in the middle, and they –along with an absent Mark Hamill– are billed first. That’s interesting. Also interesting is a lack of billing for Gwendoline Christie despite he Captain Phasma being at the centre of that vanguard of First Order stormtroopers. I have an idea of why Hamill isn’t pictured (don’t go looking for spoilers, trust me), but I’ve no idea why Christie isn’t billed.

Third, that new alien beside C-3P0 and R2-D2 is apparently Lupita Nyong’o’s character, Max Kanata.

Fourth, Oh look a FUCKING DEATH STAR. I suppose that’s the rumoured Starkiller Base which the First Order will be using to terrorize the galaxy.

Fifth, I really like how Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) staff lines up with Kylo Ren’s (Adam Driver) light-greatsword, it adds questions about her allegiances, whether she’ll be a force user, and if nothing else just divides up the image in a really interesting way.

Sixth, I much prefer the banner version of the poster, in which basically everything is easier to see.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

There’s a trailer coming tomorrow for _The Force Awakens_, presumably the final one before the movies release in December. Hopefully we get a set of character sheets before the movie release, too.
