We need to have a little talk about Love. Or rather “I Love You”. Those three little words that are supposed to carry some kind of meaning. Some long lasting deep connection. At least when one person is saying it to another person. Unless you’re in the Big Brother House. Then “love” is thrown around and misused the way “literally” has literally lost it’s meaning. (I see you Newsroom fans, and I understand your pain.)
But first let’s get a the business end of things out of the way. Tonight’s episode was all about the Power of Veto. Or was it? Turns out not really because in the last minute of the episode Bruno gets called into the Vault and told about the Twistos Twist! and they never got around to the POV ceremony. In short, Bruno is the HOH and he straight up nailed the paintball-tennis game to win POV. So Papa Bruno has all the power. He also had a birthday and got a card from his kids so he also had all the tears.
Papa Bruno loves his kids. At this point he is the only person who seems to genuinely mean he really, truly, madly, deeply, chick-a-cherry cola, loves. He loooooves that family of his. Good for you Papa Bruno.
Wish I could say the same for the rest of the house who seems to eat feelings for breakfast. Last time we talked about Ashleigh & Pilar having a heart-to-heart about their hearts getting too tangled up in their showmances. That it was difficult to tell where the game ended and the feelings began.
I love you. I love you too. I love you so much. I love you, Bro. No hard feelings, I love you. Those are just a mere drop in the bucket of the amount of times I hear these people lay the L Word on each other. And that was just in tonight’s show. They’ve known each other for less than a month. I hate to be the hardened cynical one but at the rate these HGs are pushing each other in front of the proverbial buses I don’t think they know what love means.
Or… is it generational? Am I (gasp) getting old? Are the young people letting L-bombs fly while abusing irony? You know who I’ve said that to? My parents. My grandmother. And my oldest friend in the world at 4 in the morning when I was driving her drunk ass home on her birthday.
I do say I love a lot of things, though. Coffee. Fast & Furious movies. Groot. The Internet has made us all lousy (and lazy) with hyperbole and everything is awesome, everything is something to be amazed by. It’s easy to “love” stuff. So is it possible that with all the loving of stuff, lips are loosened and people aren’t as careful about casually saying they love someone?
Because that’s a recipe for heartbreak. At the very least hurt feelings. And strangely the more “I Love You” gets tossed around, the more it’s specialness wears thin and with it the connection between people.
Case in point: Johnny Veto. JV is on the chopping block this week. He and Kevin have become close, having three-way-snuggles in bed with Pilar at night, comforting each other when times get rough. Johnny even went so far as to save Kevin when he won Power of Veto. All made slightly more intense by the little crush Johnny has on Kevin that’s not reciprocated. So when Kevin stepped up to play in the POV competition and targeted (and eliminated) Johnny it was a punch in the gut. In one of the more trembling and sincere moments we’ve seen in the Diary Room, Johnny admitted to not knowing if they had been friends for real or friends in the game.
Poor Johnny Veto. I’m sure all of Canada wanted to comfort him in that moment. It reminded me of having crushes on boys in high school who then dated the one girl you couldn’t stand. So I did what any self-respecting former 90s teen would do. I made a mix tape. For Johnny to help him get over his “Kevvy Wevvy”.
You can do better, JV!
