Gore Verbinski and Steve Carrell Teaming For A Thriller

Foxcatcher

Steve Carell is clearly trying to break out of the comedy pigeonhole and in case you haven’t heard his first effort, Foxcatcher, is really, really good. Now he’s teaming up with Gore Verbinski for a thriller to be produced by New Regency.

[Deadline](http://deadline.com/2014/10/steve-carell-gore-verbinski-paranoid-thriller-new-regency-847414/):

> EXCLUSIVE: Gore Verbinski will direct Steve Carell in an untitled paranoid thriller that New Regency will put in production in March. It’s the first project in the multiyear deal between Blind Wink and New Regency, and several others will follow in quick succession. The script was written by Steve Conrad, whose credits include The Pursuit Of Happyness and The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. The plan is for Verbinski to follow this one by shooting back-to-back projects for New Regency. Those films will be A Cure For Wellness, an elevated horror film written by Revolutionary Road scribe Justin Haythe, and Passengers. The latter is the working title for a large-scale action comedy also scripted by Conrad.

It’s not surprising that Verbinski has this deal. _The Lone Ranger_ was a non starter but _Rango_ won an Oscar and the Pirates of the Caribbean films made roughly all the cash. He also happens to just generally make good movies when he puts his mind to it.

Combine that with Carell’s new career phase and we could end up with something pretty special. We’ll keep an eye on this as it develops.
