Sony Moves ‘Amazing Spider-Man 3’ Back To 2018, ‘Sinister Six’ To 2016

The Amazing Spider-Man

Speaking of Marvel properties with release dates, Sony has announced dates for the Spider-Man franchise.

[Variety has the scoop](http://variety.com/2014/film/news/spider-man-spinoff-sinister-six-dated-for-nov-11-2016-amazing-spider-man-3-back-to-2018-1201267269/):

> Looking to broaden its Spider-Man franchise, Sony has dated spin-off “Sinister Six” for Nov. 11, 2016 as the next tentpole in its key property — while moving back “The Amazing Spider-Man 3″ two years to 2018.

> Sony did not set a specific 2018 date for “The Amazing Spider-Man 3.” It had originally dated “The Amazing Spider-Man 4″ for May 4, 2018, but that’s no longer the plan.

> After modest box office results for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” the studio thinks “Sinister Six” will expand the Spider-Man universe by bringing in villains, making Sony a stronger competitor against the likes of Disney/Marvel’s “Avengers” and WB’s Justice League superheroes in the coming years.

> The studio has also slated “Uncharted” for June 10, 2016 — the date previously held by “The Amazing Spider-Man 3.”

Technically speaking this news came down before Marvels announcement that they’ve picked up the May 2018 date which makes some sense. Marvel Studios loves prime release dates and May is a prime release month.

It also shows how poorly Amazing Spider-Man has done, being critically reviled and despite making hundreds of thousands of dollars maybe not even making a profit.

Drew Goddard is helming Sinister Six, now dated for 2016, and Sony is hoping that that’ll spur more interest. Will Spider-Man be in it? Presumably. Is that Andrew Garfield? Presumably. Will Sony get back any of the good will they’ve lost? Who knows!
