As if we needed another reason to be upset at Sony for what they are doing to Spider-Man they say this BS.
So here are the key lines from an interview with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach at The Playlist:
Are Miles Morales (“Ultimate Spider-Man”), Ben Reilly (clone Spider-Man) or Miguel O’Hara (“Spider-Man 2099”) on the table? If you want a Spider-Man movie every year why not bring in some of the other variations?
Arad: No. The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today’s world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don’t know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man.
So Spider-Man in the cinematic realm will always be Peter Parker?
Tolmach: As far as we’re concerned. The guys who take it over after us… Who knows…
First off, yes, the interview is nearly a week old. I’m still playing catch up here.
Second off, who cares because this should be something we care about. Andrew Garfield himself said that when he’s done with Spider-Man and you know what? That might be the best possible way to extend the series. They could re-cast Peter Parker but why bother when you could tell some more really interesting stories? The Death of Peter Parker could be a compelling end to a trilogy of films, no?
But no. Because reasons? The reasons they give are total bullshit and all they do is close doors for storytelling ideas. And close themselves off to being the guys who brought Black/Latino Spider-Man to screens. And betray a further misunderstanding of their own movies. And worst of all completely underestimate their audiences.
So they’re doing a bunch of things but none of those things are good. It’s almost like all they care about is not losing the rights to the character and generating money rather than telling good stories and telling them well.
