Something For The Weekend: Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace

Garth Marengi

We recorded a new podcast last night (which you’ll be able to get your hands on very soon) and this series came up at the beginning. Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace was the 2004 co-creation of  Matthew Holness (who also played Marenghi) and Richard Ayoade (who is probably most famous for his lead role in The IT Crowd), and it’s a laser-sharp spoof of the low-budget horror serials that used to air in the 90s.

What I love about the series is how well it’s designed to look like it’s shoddily-made, woefully written and terribly acted. There’s so many little details that you’ll certainly recognise if you’ve ever been involved in filmmaking or spent time with someone who is. However, it’s very, very English – the humour is dry and straight-faced, so it that’s not your thing, then this may not sit with you. But if the episode below whets your whistle, then I’ve just filled your weekend.

Have a good one! And beware of telepathic cats.
