From The Not-At-All-Surprising-Dept: Divergent Part 3 Now To Be Parts 3 AND 4

Divergent

Another Young Adult franchise, another final chapter split into two cash printing machines parts. Because if Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Twilight can do it then sure, why not this one too.

> Lionsgate/Summit will adapt Veronica Roth‘s Divergent novel trilogy into a total of not three, but four films starring Shailene Woodley as the dystopian sci-fi heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger revealed today. Following last month’s blockbuster hit Divergent and its planned 2015 sequel Insurgent, Allegiant – adapted from the third book in Roth’s bestselling YA book series – will be split into two separate films to conclude the franchise. Lionsgate had previously set Allegiant for a March 18, 2016 release. Allegiant Part 1 will keep that date, with Part 2 to follow on March 24, 2017. Both films will be produced separately.

Here’s my favourite bit though, from the producers:

> “The storytelling arc and world of the characters lend themselves perfectly to two films, a storytelling strategy that has worked very well for us on the two Twilight Breaking Dawn films and about which we’re tremendously enthusiastic for the two upcoming Mockingjay films of The Hunger Games franchise.”

Which as far as I can tell translates to _”we’d like some more of that YA box office cheddar, please.”_

Yes, I’m cynical about tit. On the one hand I really feel like both _Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows_ and _Twlight: Breaking Dawn_ been fitted from being split up. The former because it allowed them to not leave out so much of the story and the latter because it gave the last movie a weird focus that made it kind of work in a “[holy-shit-this-is-hilarious](https://awesomefriday.ca/2012/12/matt-watches-bad-movies-twilight-breaking-dawn-part-2/)” way. However after having seen Divergent I’m actually just not convinced there is enough story in each book to fill out too movies without making them both overly long, drawn out bores. I mean the first movie was that and it only covered one book.

Either way, looks like we’ll be seeing Shailene Woodley once a year for the next few years. So there’s that.
