Watch: The Night of the Doctor, a Short Prelude to The Day of the Doctor

Doctor Who

The Day of the Doctor is rapidly approaching. The 50th anniversary episode of the Doctor Who promises to explain a whole lot about the Doctor, his nature, and his involvement in the Time War. Now BBC has released a short film titled “Night of the Doctor” as a prelude. Let’s watch!

HOLY SHITBALLS.

So for those of you who do not know, that was Paul McGann, otherwise known as The 8th Doctor. He hasn’t been on screen since the TV movie that was made in 1996. That’s actually his only canon appearance, but he has reprised the role in radio quite a bit. So naturally, this is a big deal and the story here confirms some basic details: namely that John Hurt’s Doctor comes between the 8th and 9th and that he isn’t The Doctor at all. The Sisterhood of Kann (another group as old and wise as the Time Lords) help the 8th Doctor regenerate into something else, a warrior.

This is all kinds of interesting. First off it explains how there can be an extra regeneration but the numbering of the Doctors isn’t off. Secondly, we’re going to see the Time War or at least part of it, as that’s the whole reason to generate into a warrior: to stop running from it. Thirdly, and this is the bit that I find pretty exciting, it’s entirely possible that the BBC have managed to keep secret that Christopher Eccleston may also appear in The Day of the Doctor reprising his role as the 9th Doctor. Think about it: if we’re going to see 10th and 11th square off against this Warrior then thee Warrior is going to lose (naturally) and presumably regenerate into 9th, right?

I realize that for those of you unfamiliar with Doctor Who this is likely sounding like gobbldey gook, but if you have any idea what I am talking about? You should be pretty excited to see where this goes as well.

The Day of the Doctor is next Saturday, 23rd November 2013.
