Comments Off on Catchup Reviews: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Big Hero 6, Dear White People, The F Word, and Horns

It’s December which means I have pretty much exactly no time to do anything lately but that hasn’t stopped me from seeing a couple of movies, just from writing them up in a timely manner.
But since I’ve seen so many you’re gonna get the shortest version of each of these reviews that I can muster.

Comments Off on Something for the Weekend: X-Men: First Class

Next week sees the release of the latest film in the X-Men franchise: Days of Future Past. Why not give yourself a refresher on what led up to that movie by checking out 2011s First Class?
Featuring a story that chronicles the early days of mutant kind and the friendship between James McAvoy’s Professor Xavier and Michael Fassbenders Magneto, and how that friendship became animosity. It’s great stuff with great performances by McAvoy and Fassbender as well as Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, and Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw.
It’s not a perfect movie but it’s easily the best of the X-Men films to date, it’s fun, it’s exciting, it has great action and a fantastic score, and what else do I really need to say here? Below are referral links to the movie on iTunes and Amazon, pick yourself up a copy and help us keep the lights on at the same time.
Thanks, enjoy, and have a great weekend!

It’s hard to believe that it has only been a year and a half since The Hunger Games came out. There has been a string of young adult books adapted into movies following the success of Harry Potter, most of them featuring an up and coming young actor in the lead surrounded by Hollywood veterans, usually fighting against some oppressive regime. The Hunger Games was no different. Jennifer Lawrence was aiming for her big break and Lionsgate was looking for a new cash cow.
The film itself wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t really good either. Suffering from a small budget and a weak screenplay it fell comfortably into the “good enough” category and made enough money to warrant adapting the rest of the series into movies.
It’s a good thing too because where The Hunger Games was just good enough, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is actually really good.

Next week the second film in The Hunger Games trilogy, Catching Fire will be released. As it’s the second part in a trilogy what better way to spend this weekend than catching up on the first part?
The Hunger Games is set in a future dystopia where kids are forced to fight to the death every year. Jennifer Lawrence stars in her first big lead role. David O Russell has made some great films and it looks like he’s basically asked everyone who’s been nominated for an Oscar in his last few to come back and be in his new one, American Hustle. The film is a fictionalization of the ABSCAM FBI sting of the 1970s starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner. That cast alone is enough to get my butt in a seat, but there’s a trailer now too so let’s check that out.
