Daniel Day-Lewis to retire from Acting. No, really.

The three time best actor winner has one more film coming out this winter and then he’s apparently taking off for good.

[Variety has the scoop](http://variety.com/2017/film/news/daniel-day-lewis-quits-acting-oscar-winner-1202472766/):

> Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, widely considered one of the preeminent actors of his generation, is retiring from acting, Variety has learned.

> The 60-year-old star, who has played presidents, writers, and gang leaders in a career that has spanned four decades, has one final film awaiting release, an untitled drama set in the world of high fashion. It is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2017 and reunites him with Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed Day-Lewis to a best actor Oscar in 2007’s “There Will Be Blood.” Day-Lewis intends to help promote the movie, according to a person familiar with his plans.

> He did not give a reason for his retirement. In a statement, Day-Lewis’ spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, confirmed the news: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. ”

Day-Lewis is of the “incredibly method” school of acting. he learned Czech to prepare for his role in **The Unbearable Lightness of Being**, spent the entirety of the production of **My Left Foot** in a wheelchair, learned to be an outdoorsman to prepare for **Last of the Mohicans**, and the list goes on. He’s a singular performer, but that kind of dedication must take something out of you so maybe retirement is the right call.

Still, this sucks for fans of good cinema, since Day-Lewis is also probably the best actor of his generation. In the 1990s he took some time off to work as a cobbler and woodworker though, so maybe this time is the same sort of deal. He’s already picky, maybe he’s just taking a short break. Or maybe he’s in deep research mode for a role as a retiree. We’ll really never know until he decides to come out of retirement, or not.
