VIFF 2014

1987

1987 is an autobiographical film by writer/director Ricardo Trogi. He looks back at that year in his life and all the wacky hijinks that he got up to. The film is self-deprecating, honest, and funny, but it also suffers from some of the same problems that most teen coming of age comedies do.

VIFF Review: Maps to the Stars

VIFF 2014

Maps to the Stars

David Cronenberg makes two kinds of films: Great ones and weird ones. I’m honestly not sure which category Maps to the Stars falls into. On the one hand it’s a biting indictment of Hollywood and the stars who live there and featuring some completely amazing performances but on the other it’s a muddled mess of slow-moving plots, some of which are never resolved.

Why I’ve Stopped Playing Destiny

Destiny sit

Maybe you read my review. Maybe you took the message – that it’s all about the finely-tuned shooting and the loot rather than story progression – and bought a copy to experience it yourself. Maybe you’re enjoying it as much as I was. It was going so well up to a point, but following a few moments of realisation, it’s sat dormant in my hard drive for a week.

So, what changed?

Doctor Who and the Case of Dramatic Irony

News / Comments Off on Doctor Who and the Case of Dramatic Irony

New Doctor Who costumeThe last week has seen me sidetracked with a big project and thus totally neglecting my self-appointed duties as Awesome Friday’s TV correspondent.  I promise there will be full analysis of the Fall TV Premieres to come… just as soon as I sit in front of my DVR and mainline them.  In spite of my distraction the Doctor would not be ignored, at least not after Sunday Football was through.  This must be how Clara feels.  Now if only I had her hair. Awesome: Jon Favreau Wants To Open A Restaurant Based On ‘Chef’; Buy The Movie Now

News, Recommends / Comments Off on Awesome: Jon Favreau Wants To Open A Restaurant Based On ‘Chef’; Buy The Movie Now

Chef

Chef was the story of a celebrity chef who buys a food truck and drives it across the southern United States after his career implodes. Jon Favreau really seems to have found his footing again, much like his character, in returning to the simple movies that made him famous in the first place.

Not only that: the food was amazing. This is not a film you should see hungry. And now if you live in LA there’s an outside chance you won’t have to because Favreau and Chef Roy Choi (consultant on the film) want to open a real EL Jeffe.

25 Jump Street

There’s a sentence you’d never predict you’d get to say.

The end credits of 22 Jump Street are hilarious. After an entire movie of meta humour at the expense of sequels we’re treated to title cards from all the crazy ideas that might go into an ongoing franchise. And now thanks to an Imgur user you can see them all. Hooray! Note, this doesn’t spoil the movie proper but some of these are going to be way more hilarious in context. Fair warning.

Trailers / Comments Off on New ‘Jupiter Ascending’ Trailer Highlights How Epic This Movie Might Be

Jupiter Ascending

Jupiter Ascending was originally slated for release this past July and many people, myself included, were looking forward to it. Then it got pushed back to February 2015 and we’re not entirely sure why. The Wachowskis say they need more time to finish it up but is the film a mess? Were they worried it couldn’t compete?

Well there’s a new trailer and it looks like it can compete.
