The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Trailer: Who Is King Under The Mountain?

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Hot on the heels of the [8 new posters](https://awesomefriday.ca/2013/11/awesome-8-new-posters-for-the-hobbit-the-desolation-of-smaug/) there’s a shiny new 3 minute trailer for _The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug_. Let’s watch!

This trailer does a much better job of selling me on this movie. In fact it’s one of the most effective trailers I’ve seen in a while. we get a great look at the world, a dash of prophecy and a whole lot of adventure. I also love how the trailer, as with the posters, focusses on characters other than Bilbo. Luke Evans has some great focus in the first half as Bard the Bowman (and there’s a shot of what looks like his black arrow in flight) as well as shots of Thorin, Legolas, Tauriel, and basically everyone else and a moment to hammer home the importance of the Arkenstone.

I’m finding myself more and more excited about the second Hobbit film, mostly because all the big action takes place in the the second half of the book which this movie portrays. I’m not sure at what point this movie will end in the story but the bulk of the third movie, _The Hobbit: There And Back Again_ is meant to be new material written by Peter Jackson and co. based on appendices and other writings by Tolkien. I have no idea what that is going to mean, but I’m hoping that this movie wraps up the original story so that the new material can stand on it’s own and we can better judge it. And hopefully it doesn’t suck.

In the mean time, _The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug_ is releasing on 13th December.
