Review: About Time

About Time

Richard Curtis has an interesting filmography. Of the films he’s directed, most of them are fairly lighthearted fluff which is, depending on your disposition, sweet or saccharine. Films like _Bridget Jones Diary_ and _Love Actually_. He’s written far more, including the likes of _War Horse_ for Steven Spielberg, but it’s the sweet stuff he’ll likely be remembered for.

His latest effort, _About Time_ appears to be much of the same but with a dash of time travel thrown in for good measure. Is it good? Well, I dunno about that. Is it bad? Well, I dunno about that either.

The Monuments Men Pushed Back to 2014. Sad Face.

Monuments Men

The Monuments Men, the George Clooney directed World War 2 movie about a group of art experts rushing to rescue art and culture from the ravages of Hitlers war, has been pushed back to 2014. Apparently they simply just didn’t leave enough time between a spring shoot and a late fall/early winter release to complete post production.

This makes sense, however I’m sure the idea of releasing in the spring instead of against the tail end of awards season didn’t hurt. First quarter 2014 means it’ll be eligible for the 2015 Oscars instead of the next ones, but that’s just fine too.

Grand Budapest Hotel Trailer + Poster: The Most Wes Andersony Wes Anderson Film Yet (Not A Bad Thing)!

Grand Budapest Hotel

Wes Anderson makes a certain flavour of film. I like to call it “Wes Andersony” because he’s the only guy that makes that particular flavour. _The Grand Budapest Hotel_ appears to be the most Wes Andersony film yet. Let’s watch!

The Legend of Korra: Episode 2.07 & 2.08 Recap, Thoughts & Speculation

LoK s02e07_title

Studio Mir returned this week for a special 2-part episode of The Legend of Korra, and what a treat! The animation was gorgeous, the style was beautiful, and the story itself was fun and engaging. If you only watch two episodes this season, make it these two. My recap, thoughts and speculation are below the jump.

These Are The Episodes… Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 3

Deep Space Nine

The second season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ended in a dark place. The Federation finally made contact with The Dominion, a major power in the Gamma Quadrant we heard about throughout most of the season, with disastrous results. The Dominion, it is made clear, is not to be trifled with and hammered that point home in a big way.

The Federation is left reeling, and war seems all but inevitable.

Season three picks up where season two left off. The Federation tries to find a way to avoid war; The Dominion slowly begins to infiltrate the Alpha Quadrant. Bajor is still experiencing growing pains as an independent power leading to power struggles politically and conflicts of faith as they work toward Federation membership. Meanwhile, the ever-present Cardassians are working in the background, but to what end?

These are the episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, season 3.

Review: Don Jon

Don Jon

It’s hard not to love Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He started out as your average adorable child actor and then rather than transitioning into fluff pictures he went indie, working on great films like _Brick_ and _The Lookout_, building credibility and honing his acting skills. Now, after building a bank role with more mainstream fare he’s made the leap to writing and directing.

Turns out he’s pretty damn good at those too.

Review: Rush

Rush

_note: I’m finally back from vacation so regular posting will resume._

Movies about people driving fast cars can be pretty hit or miss. It’s a good thing then that _Rush_ is a movie about the people who drive fast cars instead. The film follows the 1976 season of Formula One racing and the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda, the former a hard drinking fast living playboy with a natural talent for driving and the latter a cool headed, clean living son of a businessman who relies on technical genius and precision. In short these men are polar opposites, an unstoppable force and an immovable object, and while both at the top of their game it makes complete sense that they would end up butting heads.

And it’s pretty fun to watch as a result.
