65th Emmy Award Winners

Emmys

Tonight was the 65th Annual Emmy Awards honouring the best and brightest in television. Hit the jump to see Neil Patrick Harris’s opening monologue and a full list of nominees and winners.

Ok so that was kind of lame, but it had its moments. Anyway, on to the list. The winners are in bold.

#### Best Drama Series
* **“Breaking Bad” – AMC**
* “Downton Abbey” – PBS
* “Game of Thrones” – HBO
* “Homeland” – Showtime
* “House of Cards” – Netflixf
* “Mad Men” – AMC

No real surprise here. Breaking Bad has been the odds on favourite for a while. I was surprised to not see The Newsroom on this list though, and it would have been nice to see Game of Thrones take it home.

#### Best Comedy Series
* **“Modern Family” – ABC**
* “The Big Bang Theory” – CBS
* “Girls” – HBO
* “30 Rock” – NBC
* “Louie” – FX
* “Veep” – HBO

You know, as long as _The Big Bang Theory_ lost I was going to be fine with this. And it did, so I am. Also, one of these years _Louie_ will take it home.

#### Lead Actor – Drama Series
* **Jeff Daniels, “The Newsroom”**
* Hugh Bonneville, “Downton Abbey”
* Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad”
* Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”
* Kevin Spacey, “House of Cards”
* Damian Lewis, “Homeland”

Ok this was a surprise because it seemed like everyone just assume that Bryan Cranston would take it. However, I was kind of hoping that Kevin Spacey would win just because _House of Cards_ was pretty incredible. All that said? Jeff Daniels is entirely deserving. He’s the reason to watch _The Newsroom_. I’m glad he won.

#### Lead Actress – Drama Series
* **Claire Danes, “Homeland”**
* Connie Britton, “Nashville”
* Michelle Dockery, “Downton Abbey”
* Vera Farmiga, “Bates Motel”
* Elisabeth Moss, “Mad Men”
* Kerry Washington, “Scandal”
* Robin Wright, “House of Cards”

#### Lead Actor – Miniseries or Movie
* **Michael Douglas, “Behind The Candelabra”**
* Benedict Cumberbatch, “Parade’s End”
* Matt Damon, “Behind The Candelabra”
* Toby Jones, “The Girl”
* Al Pacino, “Phil Spector”

No surprises here. If you haven’t seen Behind the Candelabra yet you really should. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch was nominated? Damn he really is in everything right now.

#### Lead Actress – Miniseries or Movie
* **Laura Linney, “The Big C: Hereafter”**
* Jessica Lange, “American Horror Story: Asylum”
* Helen Mirren, “Phil Spector”
* Elisabeth Moss, “Top of the Lake”
* Sigourney Weaver, “Political Animals”

I can’t say as I have seen any of these nor had I heard much buzz. Soooo yay?

#### Lead Actor – Comedy Series
* **Jim Parsons, “The Big Bang Theory”**
* Jason Bateman, “Arrested Development”
* Matt LeBlanc, “Episodes”
* Don Cheadle, “House of Lies”
* Louie C.K., “Louie”
* Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”

Words can’t express how much I don’t like The Big Bang Theory. Seriously. I don’t get it. How does it keep winning awards?

#### Lead Actress – Comedy Series
* **Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”**
* Laura Dern, “Enlightened”
* Lena Dunham, “Girls”
* Edie Falco, “Nurse Jackie”
* Amy Poehler, “Parks and Recreation”
* Tina Fey, “30 Rock”

I’ve been meaning to watch Veep. Here’s one more reason.

#### Reality-Competition Program
* **“The Voice” – NBC**
* “The Amazing Race” – CBS
* “Project Runway” – Lifetime
* “So You Think You Can Dance” – Fox
* “Top Chef” – Bravo

#### Variety Series
* **“The Colbert Report” – Comedy Central**
* “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” – Comedy Central
* “Jimmy Kimmel Live” – ABC
* “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” – ABC
* “Real Time With Bill Maher” – HBO
* “Saturday Night Live” – NBC

For some reason I stopped watching both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report ages ago, but it’s nice to see them win.

#### Miniseries or Movie
* **“Behind the Candelabra” • HBO**
* “American Horror Story: Asylum” • FX Networks
* “The Bible” • History
* “Phil Spector ” • HBO
* “Political Animals” • USA
* “Top Of The Lake” • Sundance Channel

I already said it above. FInd this movie and watch it. It’s even on DVD now.

#### Supporting Actor – Drama Series
* **Bobby Cannavale, “Boardwalk Empire“**
* Jonathan Banks, “Breaking Bad”
* Aaron Paul, “Breaking Bad”
* Jim Carter, “Downton Abbey”
* Peter Dinklage, “Game of Thrones”
* Mandy Patinkin, “Homeland”

This seems a little shocking because I had kind of assumed that Jonathan Banks or Aaron Paul would take this. Maybe I have _Breaking Bad_ on the brain. It would have been nice for Banks to win too because he’s both awesome and not going to be eligible to win for Breaking Bad next year while Aaron Paul will be.

#### Supporting Actress – Drama Series
* **Anna Gunn, “Breaking Bad”**
* Maggie Smith, “Downton Abbey”
* Emilia Clarke, “Game of Thrones”
* Christine Baranski, “The Good Wife”
* Morena Baccarin, “Homeland”
* Christina Hendricks, “Mad Men”

Fuck yeah. Anna Gunn has been killing it in season 5 of Breaking Bad and I feel like she’s under appreciated by the fans. Maybe this will shut them up. Then again this is the internet so probably not.

#### Writing – Drama Series
* **Henry Bromell, “Homeland” • Q&A**
* George Mastras, “Breaking Bad” • Dead Freight
* Thomas Schnauz, “Breaking Bad” • Say My Name
* Julian Fellowes, “Downton Abbey” • Episode 4
* David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, “Game of Thrones” • The Rains of Castamere

So should I watch Homeland then?

Directing – Drama Series
* **David Fincher, “House Of Cards” • Chapter 1**
* Tim Van Patten, “Boardwalk Empire” • Margate Sands
* Michelle MacLaren, “Breaking Bad” • Gliding Over All
* Jeremy Webb, “Downton Abbey” • Episode 4
* Lesli Linka Glatter, “Homeland” • Q&A

Nice! Fincher helped set the tone for the entire series with the first episode.

#### Supporting Actor – Comedy Series
* **Tony Hale, “Veep”**
* Adam Driver, “Girls”
* Jesse Tyler Ferguson, “Modern Family”
* Ed O’Neill, “Modern Family” as Jay Pritchett
* Ty Burrell, ”Modern Family” as Phil Dunphy
* Bill Hader, “Saturday Night Live”

Again, it seems like I should check out Veep. Also, Buster wins an award! Yay!

* **Merritt Wever, “Nurse Jackie” as Zoey Barkow**
* Mayim Bialik, “The Big Bang Theory” as Amy Farrah Fowler
* Jane Lynch, “Glee” as Sue Sylvester

* Louis C.K., “Louie” • New Year’s Eve

* Zachary Quinto, “American Horror Story: Asylum”
* Scott Bakula, “Behind The Candelabra”
* John Benjamin Hickey, “The Big C: Hereafter”
* Peter Mullan, “Top Of The Lake”

I was pulling for Bakula, but James Cromwell is a hell of an actor. I mean, if you’re going to lose to someone….

#### Supporting Actress – Miniseries or a Movie
* **Ellen Burstyn, “Political Animals”**
* Sarah Paulson, “American Horror Story: Asylum”
* Imelda Staunton, “The Girl”
* Charlotte Rampling, “Restless”

#### Writing – Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special

* Julian Jarrold, “The Girl”

Again, so see the movie. Geez!

#### Writing – Variety Series

* Jerry Foley, “Late Show With David Letterman” • Episode 3749
* Jonathan Krisel, “Portlandia” • Alexandra

So there you have it. All the winners. A few surprises here and there. One thing I rather like is how split up it was. It’s kind of cool when one show sweeps everything, but I do honestly prefer when the awards are spread out over a bunch of shows.

And seriously, see _Behind the Candelabra_.
