Review: Prisoners

Prisoners

_Ed. Note: I know this is really late, but I’m on holiday!_

You’ve already [seen the trailer](https://awesomefriday.ca/2013/06/prisoners-trailer-hugh-jackman-goes-crazy/) for Prisoners so you already know the basic set up. Hugh Jackman and Maria Bello are best friends with Terrance Howard and Viola Davis On thanksgiving they share the evening together and the couples youngest children go outside to find a lost toy and never return. Paul Dano plays a simpleton named Alex who is the best suspect and is arrested by Jake Gyllenhaal but it quickly turns out that Alex doesn’t have the faculties to have committed such a crime and is released. Angry, desperate and searching for answers, Hugh Jackman kidnaps Paul Dano and proceeds to torture him for answers.

Turns out though that there is more going on. I’m going to talk in more detail after the jump and while I’m not going to directly spoil anything this _is_ a mystery story so talking about it will give you clues. If you want to skip the review and know what I think? Yes, go see it. It’s good. It’s not perfect but it’s well thought out and incredibly well acted and beautifully shot. Details after the jump.

Everything Wrong With Star Trek Into Darkness in 7 Minutes or Less

Star Trek INto Darkness

Er all know how much I really didn’t like Star Trek Into Darkness (most of Star Trek fandom doesn’t, it was recently [ranked worst film in the series by fans at the Vegas Star Trek Convention](http://badassdigest.com/2013/08/11/the-star-trek-movies-as-ranked-by-star-trek-con-goers/).

Well now when people ask me why I can just show them this video! Handy!

The Legend of Korra: Episode 2.03 Recap

lok s02e03 title

The third episode of Book Two of The Legend of Korra aired last night, so it’s time for another recap. I’ll start by saying I enjoyed this episode much more than the premier, though it’s hard to say if that was due to a leap in quality, or because I watched M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender directly before I watched this episode. (That movie has the power to make absolutely anything seem amazing by comparison.) Overwhelming evidence points to an actual leap in quality. Recap, thoughts, and speculation after the jump. As always, beware of spoilers!

Valve Teases Announcement; Here Comes The Steam Box!

Steam

Well now, this is interesting. There have rumours circulating for a *long* time that *Half-Life* developers and operators of Steam, Valve, are preparing to shift into home console production with a TV box that would let you play all your Steam games from the comfort of your sofa. The hype train gained even more speed last week when owner Gabe Newall said that open-source operating system Linux was “the future of gaming” and they were working on a way to get it into people’s living rooms.

Naya’s Quest: Don’t Believe Your Eyes

NQ2

The creator of my favourite game of 2012, *Super Hexagon*, has finally released his new project that, up to today, had simply been referred to as “Isothingy” – puzzle adventure story *Naya’s Quest*. What’s great about this – apart from the fact that it’s free and playable in-browser – is that it tells a story that could *only* be told in this style of video game.

Oldboy “Hotel” Teaser and Posters: In Case You Were Wondering How Creepy The Movie Is Going To Be

Oldboy Hotel

Here’s a whole new set of teaser posters for Oldboy as well as a teaser for the “hotel” in the movie. If you haven’t see the original these shold give you some idea how creepy this movie is going to be. Also, go see the original, it’s great. If you have seen the original just enjoy these and don’t say anything.

My favourite of the posters is above. The rest and the teaser are after the jump.

Awesome: Marvel’s Peggy Carter May Get Her Own Series

Agent Carter

Marvel is really kicking things into high gear. Their series of films basically already owns the box office at your local theatre and with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiering next week they’re hoping to dominate the small screen as well. If that one takes off it looks like we may get another series starring Captain America’s girlfriend Peggy Carter.

Awesome: Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling

22 Rules

This is seriously awesome. Former Pixar storyboard artist Emma Coats ([here’s her twitter])(https://twitter.com/lawnrocket)) tweeted 22 things she’d learned from her senior colleagues about how to tell good stories. It’s a pretty amazing list on it’s own, and now Imgur user DinoIgnacio has set them against still from Pixar movies. Hit the jump to see them and be inspired.
