Prisoners

Ed. Note: I know this is really late, but I’m on holiday!

You’ve already seen the trailer for Prisoners so you already know the basic set up. Hugh Jackman and Maria Bello are best friends with Terrance Howard and Viola Davis On thanksgiving they share the evening together and the couples youngest children go outside to find a lost toy and never return. Paul Dano plays a simpleton named Alex who is the best suspect and is arrested by Jake Gyllenhaal but it quickly turns out that Alex doesn’t have the faculties to have committed such a crime and is released. Angry, desperate and searching for answers, Hugh Jackman kidnaps Paul Dano and proceeds to torture him for answers.

Turns out though that there is more going on. I’m going to talk in more detail after the jump and while I’m not going to directly spoil anything this is a mystery story so talking about it will give you clues. If you want to skip the review and know what I think? Yes, go see it. It’s good. It’s not perfect but it’s well thought out and incredibly well acted and beautifully shot. Details after the jump.

Breaking Bad Complete

The final episode of Breaking Bad airs this coming Sunday. It’ll be the end of an era, but thanks to the magic of home media it’s an era you can relive. And just look how you can relive it. The entire series blu-ray box set comes in a barrel. How awesome is that? You get a boat load of special features but also a Los Pollos Hermanos apron. If you could get the apron separately I”d list just that, too.

This set is pretty bad ass so you should probably click the link below to preorder yours. Full disclaimer: Yes this is an affiliate link so if you buy we get a cut. That cut helps us keep the site going though so, you know, please do that.

And just in case you’d rather buy the series digitally instead of the awesome barrel, here are the deluxe versions on iTunes:

The Legend of Korra: Episode 2.03 Recap

lok s02e03 title

The third episode of Book Two of The Legend of Korra aired last night, so it’s time for another recap. I’ll start by saying I enjoyed this episode much more than the premier, though it’s hard to say if that was due to a leap in quality, or because I watched M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender directly before I watched this episode. (That movie has the power to make absolutely anything seem amazing by comparison.) Overwhelming evidence points to an actual leap in quality. Recap, thoughts, and speculation after the jump. As always, beware of spoilers!

Steam

Well now, this is interesting. There have rumours circulating for a long time that Half-Life developers and operators of Steam, Valve, are preparing to shift into home console production with a TV box that would let you play all your Steam games from the comfort of your sofa. The hype train gained even more speed last week when owner Gabe Newall said that open-source operating system Linux was “the future of gaming” and they were working on a way to get it into people’s living rooms.

Something for the Weekend: Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3 is one of the better Marvel Cinematic Universe movies so far, with a great outing from Robert Downey Jr. and a new tone and directorial style from Shane Black, it really does stand out from the growing crowd of Marvel films.

So why not pick yourself up a copy? Below you’ll find links to buy it on iTunes, or on Blu-Ray or 3D Blu-Ray from Amazon. The Blu-Ray isn’t technically released until Tuesday the 24th but if you buy on iTunes you can have it right now.

Full disclosure: these are affiliate links and if you use them we get a cut, and us getting a cut means that it’ll be easier to keep the site running. So, you know, please do that.

NQ2

The creator of my favourite game of 2012, Super Hexagon, has finally released his new project that, up to today, had simply been referred to as “Isothingy” – puzzle adventure story Naya’s Quest. What’s great about this – apart from the fact that it’s free and playable in-browser – is that it tells a story that could only be told in this style of video game.

Oldboy Hotel

Here’s a whole new set of teaser posters for Oldboy as well as a teaser for the “hotel” in the movie. If you haven’t see the original these shold give you some idea how creepy this movie is going to be. Also, go see the original, it’s great. If you have seen the original just enjoy these and don’t say anything.

My favourite of the posters is above. The rest and the teaser are after the jump.

Agent Carter

Marvel is really kicking things into high gear. Their series of films basically already owns the box office at your local theatre and with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiering next week they’re hoping to dominate the small screen as well. If that one takes off it looks like we may get another series starring Captain America’s girlfriend Peggy Carter.

Speaking of Pixar: they have, for better or worse, released a film each year since 2006. There had been years without before that but as they made more money they started doing more work and now the yearly Pixar movie has been something we all look forward to. Well now we have to wait another year because 2014s “The Good Dinosaur” has been pushed to 2015.
